Hello all,

I acquired a 1985 BMW K100RT with 75k miles on it 2 weeks ago. I have been enjoying the bike so far. This forum has helped me with learning more about the bike. I am planning on doing some preventative maintenance this week, as well as clearing up a small starting problem. I think the cause is the fuel filter since I can hear the fuel pump running when I press the ignition, and it didn't have a problem until I ran the bike low and refueled. I also picked up some new spark plugs just in case that could be the cause, and I don't know when they were changed last. I am also planning on re-lubing the spline this week, or next week (depending on time). I've seen a lot about Honda Moly 60 mixed with Wurth Sig 3000, but I can't find any of the Honda Moly, wondering what others use for their spline lube.

Welkome to the forum, John. Here you will find answers and opinions that will help and inform, and hopefully entertain. The part number for the Honda moly is 08798-9010. I use it in conjunction with Optimol to good effect.

When you get a free mo', go to Profile above and click on Signature. There you can place your bike's year and model so no one's asking when you're asking.

Welcome John from a little way down the Thruway.  This is a great place for anything you need to know about your bike.  There are a few of us here in Western New York, PA, and Canada who meet up from time to time.

No worries. Now that you're registered and have introduced yourself, I suggest you go to the Troubleshooting section, say, under Engine & Transmission, and create a new thread describing what your bike's symptoms are, and of course what steps you've taken to address them. With luck and insight perhaps a forum member has an answer or two. After three posts you gain access to our Forum Download treasure trove.

Fuel filter: NAPA 3032.  Most of the time they have them on hand at your local NAPA.

Ordered 2 of them to my local NAPA this previous weekend since they were out of stock. I figured if I was going to order one I might as well have a backup since it's pretty cheap. Thanks for the tip though, pretty sure I found that info on this forum when I was searching for the possible cause of my problem.

Welcome to the forum.Another New Yorker ! I'm from down state but spend lots of time in the Adirondacks at my camp riding. You are going to love that bike when you get her out in the country where she can just run free.

I am looking forward to riding to the Adirondacks next weekend provided I the spark plugs and fuel filter solve my problem. Made plans to meet some friends up there a while back, and am now hoping to make it the first longer trip with the K. Very Happy Very Happy

The sparkies you got or are waiting for...they are non-resistors, yes? NGK D7EA or Bosch X5DC equivalent are spec.

Yes, they are NGK D7EA. Just to confirm, (I'm sure I'll find out when I pull the plugs) the spark plugs need the screw on caps for this bike? Please correct me if I am wrong with that statement. I am planning to do the plugs after work today or tomorrow.

They do need the threaded caps, but the NGK sparkies I've bought recently have these caps attached. Fortunately it is a standard thread and typical size so any other brand cap will do.

As an aside, here's a post by the esteemed RickG from some years ago about using (or not) resistor plugs.

"By using a resistive cap or plug in conjunction with resistive leads you create a mismatch in impedance in the circuit and then most of the power generated by the coil is dissipated in the coil as heat and not at the gap of the plug as a big fat blue spark. This is quite detrimental to the coil as it overheats and to the plug because it doesn't get hot enough to remain clean."

I went to the local shop and tried to get the D7EA's luckily I checked for the cap before purchasing, as the ones they were selling didn't have the caps on them. The DR7EA's sound like they're only really good in a pinch, and you should change them out as quickly as you can. I made sure to pick up an extra set of plugs to keep with the bike just in case I can't find a shop stocking them when I need them most (I've found that tends to be when you can't find even the simplest of items).
