Why? because even when it was new it was slated by the uk bike press and its flipping heavy.

I started by running a single piece of goodrich brake hosing from the master cylinder and down to where the orig` rubber hose entered the r/h caliper(you need a m10x1mm banjo bolt), I removed the abs rings from the front and rear discs also removing the ridges on the rear alloy disc carrier to allow the wider rear wheel I have to slot in with only a bit of persausion.

Then I removed the rear brake hose and the very heavy abs regulator and replaced with goodrich-new copper washers everywere-

Then I removed the rear abs regulator, I cut through the metal pipes that run the length of the bike and removed them from the front of the bike( a lot of force and swearing).

Really easy to bleed the system.

The result-much better brake feel and they do work, before i was always wondering if they were going to stop me, the other thing is it feels soooo much lighter-really notice it.

Hi ssray!
I`ve got a -88 K100RS with ABS.
I`ve had some close calls when I belive the ABS helped me out.
The unit will stay on my bike as long as it`s working.
Replacing it if it goes bad is another question as the parts are expensive.
I`m not worried about the extra weight of the ABS,the K`s are heavy bikes and another few pounds won`t matter much.
I had a -86 RT before my current -88 RS.
Can`t say that I feel alot of difference in breaking with or without the ABS.
Cheers,Wikur!

Mine was not working when I got the bike, and the brakes have always been vague, Its not a few pounds more like 20-30.

As long as you notified your insurance company that you have removed ABS and got an acknowledgement, otherwise there is always a risk that if you have an incident and they find out the ABS was removed by you they have a get out of paying for free. That is because you, in insurance speak "failed to disclose a material fact" We are after all talking of an industry where many claims have been declined because the policy holder failed to disclose something not even related to the incident such as a prior criminal conviction for a minor offence.

Hey Ray, I believe the weight for the whole kit is something like 40 odd lbs.
That is including abs rings, sensors, wiring harness, abs brain, extra rubber and steel lines, regulators and regulator frame.
At the moment I plan of removing all of it this winter on my bike as its not working and all diagnostic work sofar points to brain being at fault.

K-Bike, thanks for mentioning the insurance angle. Good to know.

Got knocked off today, abs would not have helped, managed to get to walking pace and still she hit me!!.
Just fitted a r100rs fairing aswell-now has a big crack in it!, she admitted liability infront of witnesses, so should help the insurance co move a bit quicker.

Hi Ray,
Just remember when dealing with this situation in the UK that her liability to you is unlimited and you do not need to settle for write off value of the bike from her insurers. Often their insurance company in attempting to limit the cost will attempt to get you to accept a write off just say no and insist on full repair regardless of cost. You only have an obligation to accept write-off if your insurance is paying. The other point is you have no obligation to deal with her insurer at all. Legally she is liable directly to you but has chosen to enter into a private (between her and her insurer) contract that they will cover the cost of any damage she does.

A very dear friend who worked as a courier in central London had many accidents all the other parties fault and soon leaned just go straight to the small claims court get them to commence proceedings, get a court bailiff to deliver the papers (surprisingly cheap) and my friend simply refused to even talk to the other insurer just went after the person. It is surprising how quickly it focusses their mind on making it go away rather than go to court.

Really sorry to hear that.

Is that any way that you could ask the insurance to replace your bike with one equivalent to yours?

Here in Canada, I had to deal with the same type of problem (for a car).
I researched all the cars (same year and same model) for sale in my area and sent it to the adjuster claiming that it was impossible to find an equivalent car with the money that they were offering. I refused their payment and told them that a judge will have to decide according to my finding too. To avoid lengthly court case, they boosted the payout.
If the insurance tells you that one is for sale at their price but 300 mi from your home, ask for transportation allowance, + the cost of you missing work + the cost of an inspection by a qualified mechanic.
To top it, you can negotiate to keep the crashed bike at a nominal fee. If they consider that a replacement bike is valued at £1k, the valued of the crashed bike should not be higher than 1/4 to 1/3 of this value.

After arguing with the insurance, my brother in law was able to keep the crashed bike + the original settlement that the insurance was proposing. In my case (We were involved in the same accident when a truck backed up on us) I was asking for $795 in damage. They refused but 4 years later, they paid $19,000. This was a settlement just a couple of days before appearing in court.

Insurances are always trying to rip you off, but when they find somebody stubborn like me, they prefer to settle off rather than having a court judgement with the implication that other people will find it and may start to argue with them too.

I sincerely wish you good luck.
Stick to your gun and be open for negotiation. Don't close the door but bring some valid arguments in your favor. If this has to go to court, a judge will admit that you are dealing with the process in good faith and are not trying to take advantage of the insurance company.

Bert

Our experience with our Volvo 245 which was a 1985 was someone crashed into my wife clearly the other parties fault. We got an estimate for repair from memory $3,500 their insurer offered us write-off value ~$2,500 I told them to get stuffed pointed out I had no contract with their insurer to accept write-off value only with my insurer and I was not claiming on my insurance so the other drivers liability to us was not limited to write-off value. They finally grudgingly agreed and paid up in full. If the accident is your fault then they can write it off but if it was their fault demand they fix it irrespective of cost.

K-BIKE
