G'day All, My 1986 K100RT ex police is just about ready for the road. Pictures to follow shortly. The work completed to date has been:-

Replaced all fluids
Replaced all fuel lines including the lines inside the tank
Replaced brake lines with braided lines
Replaced rear master cylinder with Chinese one ( because I'm cheap)
Checked and adjusted valve clearances where necessary (inlet clearance were tight Exh. all OK)
Replaced spark plugs  (non-resistor ones)
Replaced ignition coils
Replaced ignition leads
Checked fuel pressure which is OK
Replaced fuel filter
Replaced oil filter
Plus anything I can't remember.

After all this, the Goulburn bike is very difficult to start. After testing the quality of the spark from the leads to earth (ground) the spark was orange in colour and not blue.
I am seeking the collective wisdom and knowledge of this forum to point me in the right direction.
Thank you in advance. Cheers Tom
PS My guess is starter motor drawing too much current or the ign. coils are not getting enough volts. Battery is OK.Next to check is the ignition control unit connection. Should also mention that it takes about 10 cranks before it starts to fire. Also the injectors all have a good spray pattern.

Thanks Waz, the starter motor may be part of the problem. The ignition control unit did not seem to be plugged in properly so spark is much better..
New fuel injectors to be fitted to day and then see what happens. Will keep you posted.
Cheers Tom

G'DAY All, progress has been made on the non-starting issue. It seemed to be a combination of four issues:-

- starter motor brushes and commutator ( thank you Robmack for that excellent tutorial)
- bad connection to or faulty temperature sensor unit
- cleaned ignition switch and
- contact cleaned the fuel injector relay connection.

After these items were attended to and after following and testing Crazy Frog's trouble shooting chart ( thanks Duck for reminding me of this resource) it fired up like a new one.
A few little items to finish off the project and then some piccies will be posted.
Thank you all for your input.
Cheers Tom

G'Day All,  The 'Goulburn' bike is complete and passed the rego check today and will go onto historic plates as soon as the bits of paperwork have been completed. Many thanks are due to a lot of forumers who helped to keep the k pox alive and thriving. Thanks to Indian 036 (Bill) who made the deal to purchase the bike in the first place and Rickmeister (my little brother ) who helped in transporting it home from Goulburn NSW. I suppose the man most responsible for this project is Waz who may want to elaborate on the flaring up of the K pox. Gaz also helped heaps in giving moral support and in transport support. Smithy was instrumental in supplying a low seat which is very much appreciated. Steve also helped in supplying needed parts. Thank you.
Thanks also to Charlie99, RickG, Two Wheels Better and Stuart all of whom gave lots of advice and moral support. Apologies to anyone that has been missed. A few photos of the completed 'Goulburn' bike. like

Well done Tom. What did it start out as the front end has me slightly confused.
Just read your first post...ex police. Now the question is around that front end...headlight and fairing?

Duck, you are spot on. Thank you for the comments.

Stan, it originally was a police hack i.e. an RT. The fairing on it now is a Krauser fairing with a round headlight similar to my R100R headlight. But the K100 is a bit heavier than the F650 to shunt around the shed.
I'll let Waz give us the full story on the Krauser fairing. He's got a lot of explaining to do. The original fairing has gone to a better home up in northern NSW somewhere.

Cheers
Tom

Tom seemed to have his K pox under control and he sold the Goulburn bike along with a low kilometer spare motor as a project leaving himself without a K bike. I was looking for a motor so Tom tracked the bike down and brought the bike and motor back so he could give me the motor. Thanks again Tom for the motor and Gaz for picking it up. I am directly responsible for Toms relapse so I should at least paint it for him. Well my shitty little garden shed wasn't up to it, I blame the equipment not me. Every time I painted it the painted would flare up like Toms K pox. I gave up and took it to and old mate who owed me one and owns a paint shop. It flared up on him too I know its wrong but I did get some enjoyment from it flaring up on a profesional. A few bits were replaced because paint just wouldn't stick to them. Finally it was painted, sorry it took so long.
It does look good with the low seat the shape flows nicely. Is it comfortable?

Nice job Tom, bike looks fantastic and has a great story behind it that epitomises the resourcefulness and camaraderie of the NSW krew.

Love the bit about the aerofoil beginning to work at 140 kph (87mph) - that’s some “cruising” speed! You’d think the Krause lot would have tuned it for slightly lower speed.

Thanks for all the comments Paul. I'll let you know how the aerofoil works at 147kph. It will be registered next week and put on historic plates meaning the use of the bike is somewhat restricted.
Waz has had a big input with this K100 and is responsible for my having the K pox relapse.
Cheers
Tom

Given that they come from Germany, they are designed for autobahn speeds. Sadly, I haven’t had the opportunity to ride on an autobahn, but in many km of driving on them, if you’re at 150km/h, keep a good eye on your mirrors, as you are likely to have someone up your clacker (old Aussie expression) at about 100km/h faster than you. Depending on the vehicle and traffic, my normal starts towards 180km/h, up to 230km/h in the son-in-law’s BMW 530 V8.
Pity we can’t legally try it here, but I have it on good authority that a K100RT is rock solid stable at least up to 190km/h.

Bill

I have a Krauser K100 fairing for sale if anyone is interested.
Needs a little love and a new screen...think I have some perspex or whatever the other stuff is called.

Open to bartering:
am after a pair of side panels (K100 early),
a starting switch assembly,
a pair of clip ones
