Hello all,

I recently freed up some space in my garage by selling one of my non BM bikes.
I now have a 1978 R100 rs in good working order and a partial K100 from 1984.

The bike is not all there... I bought it as a possible donor bike some years ago...
Subsequently I sold my other K100 which I had ridden for a few years and have wondered about trying to get this one on the road.

I obtained the V5 and ran an HPI check and all good!

I suppose I am wondering if it is worth trying to put the bits back together. I am missing a headlight, an exhaust system, a battery, a few bits and bobs...

Will the seals be knackered? The bike has not been ridden for at least ten years I'd guess. I don't think I could manage a complete engine overhaul.

How much would this lot be worth to somebody who wanted to take it on?

How much would it cost me to complete it?

Part of me wishes I could have a go and complete it. Part of me just wants to get shot of it...

Nothing is impossible, but . . .       How much money/time are you willing to put in? It might be worth going through Motorworks used parts site to get a ball-park figure on the parts not present.

I think I'd probably find another K100 that's complete and running, and return that one to its original donor bike status.

That said, I have one at home in a similar state, but at least I have most of the missing bits floating around somewhere in the shed.

Thanks for the reply. Daunting is the word, given the constraints: my lack of skill, no electricity in garage (yet), parts needed, lack of time, uncertainty as to internal state of engine (it is not seized and only done 13-14000 miles)...
And at the same time, I could cost it up and take a punt, have a go and nothing ventured nothing gained... 
It wouldn't cost the earth to buy some bits needed and there is help out there...here for example.
I shall consider the options and make a choice.

It's the first good candidate for cafe hacking I've seen.  I'd pull the seat off and sell the rest for top buck as a prepped-for-cafe brick.  Gotta be worth 1000 pounds to save the cafe builder the hassle of removing and getting rid of all the unnecessary bits.

Wow, a lot of expensive parts missing there!
Complete engine management/injection system, probably fuel pump needed, complete rear brakes (inc. Disc?), most of front braking, footpegs, all bar fittingsc, instruments and electrics.....

Find a new project would be my feeling..
Keep these parts for the resulting running K

Thanks all! Good to get your take on it.

To be more precise, the biggest missing bits are:

exhaust system
headlight
rear disc
possibly instrument cluster as the one I have may have a dodgy speedo.
Would require a bunch of fixings as not all there.

Some bits would need overhauling for sure eg brake calipers which I have and fork seals...

All electronic components, ECU etc are there, though a few relays are missing.
Indicators I have thanks to a member here :-)
Engine is all there
Cooling system all there
wiring harness all there
mudguards present
Seat is wrong type for the rear cowl
footpeg plates on both sides are present and brake lever.
Clutch is good and splines too

Fuel pump I have and all fuel system bits.
Ignition coils yes
Airbox and all associated bits yes
Brake lines yes


Still some important stuff missing and a fair bit of uncertainty and work needed...

You need to go through it and see what parts are missing and get prices, but it now looks like a workable project. Done over time you could pick up most of the missing bits by trolling Ebay, Craigs list. Most of the parts your missing do come up at reasonable prices. In Oz you would probably end up with a bill of around the $500.00 Au mark depending on how good you are at hunting. Probably less if you are patient.

One thing I will say to you...if that is one of the early K engines with the engineering screws and those low miles, you will enjoy that K like like a Wagner Ring Cycle.....show us a photo of the cylinder head side and we will tell you. 

You seem to have most of the pieces and even though the later seat doesn't fit....if you land on of the later duck tails and put that on then the seat will fit....

I am not sure when the engines changed but my RS is 11157 I think and its an early one.

Hi Olaf, Thanks!! I will do. The valve cover is currently off as I am refitting shims. What do you want to see exactly? Engine number?
Date of first registration is 20/09/1984
Engine  number: 0001991 or so it says on my V5

The first digits of your engine number indicate week and year. I have a 1984 K100RT and they are 3284 as in week 32 of 1984. It was registered 1 October 1984.

You will find these on the sump just below the oil filler cap. The first part does not seem to get recorded in the registration documents.

My K100RS has 4883 for week 48 of 1983.
