Hi everyone,

After winter hiatus in Norway, I'm coming out of the woodwork again but with a start-up problem : My belly-pan "attachment frame" sheared its two left-side attachment points (see drawing), leaving the belly-pan dangling.


When I had disassembled everything, I realized that the drawing didn't match the bike setup.
The drawing shows 2 screws bolted straight into the engine block whereas I have 2 fat rubber grommets between the engine block and the "attachment frame" - like a shock absorbing buffer. The rubber grommet sheared in half (into two donuts with half the height) and now one half is stuck in the engine block. No screw actually went all the way through the grommet, it looks like it had one male end screwing into the engine block and one female facing the "attachment frame" side.

I believe I can remove the rubber grommet, my real question is whether this is a standard setup and if so, does anyone know the part number of this fat grommet that I need to replace ?

I hope the problem description makes somewhat sense.

Your input would be highly appreciated as I really like the look of the bike with the belly-pan on.

The rubber side grommets are NLA from BMW now. I have the same set up as your bike (not like the ETK parts diagramme you've included). I had to search around in my old BMW stock and then auto parts shops to find a grommet that would work acceptably. If you have another look at ETK you'll see the other bellypan frame. This is more like what you have from your description. 71 60 2 303 840 is the part number for the discontinued grommet which slips over a threaded stud with only a slotted head for adjustment.

Yes that really helped. I think a long screw with some kind of a spacer could do the same job.

And those belly pans do look good. I need to repaint mine but perhaps i'm better off buying a new one, price-wise it might add up to about the same.

I revert back to the original topic of the thread (although I do love when threads take their own life).

The famous two bolts that sheared have put me in a bit of a pickle. Basically I need some advise on how to get them out. 
As seen from the pictures, I removed all the rubber and am left with a flat head with no way (?) to unscrew the bolt. Hence I probably have to drill it out somehow.

Only..it's the engine block and no margin for error and all that. I therefore want to make sure I have exhausted all other options.
Any ideas how I could go about getting these two out ?

Just grab that disc with a mole/vice grip and twist it out. It's the rubber that's come off, leaving the flange and stud in the hole - see "mini exhaust mounting bobbin" top get the idea.

Vise Grips work the treat.  I've done that trick at least 3 times on my bikes.  Sometimes you have to use the long nose version to be able to get in for the grip.

Yeah, what they've said above. Grab 'em and they twist. Another method is to cut a slot in the rubber/metal underneath and unscrew them with a large bladed screwdriver. Replacements mounts are common like radiator or external fuel pump mounts if you don't care to visit your local dealership.

If you're going to use molegrips then two things:-

1. Try and file a flat on either side of the bobbin to provide more gripping area
2. Put the molegrips in a vice and file the nose flat.

Update.

I managed to get it sorted using the mole grip and a hammer, as you prescribed.
I also found the rubber grommets at a local store and I think they will do the job. They also have a 24mm hex connection so I won't have to do this job again.

Now onto fixing the belly pan frame and getting the belly pan painted.
I do love the look of the bike with the whole assembly mounted.
