Thanks for answering, but IMO it can't be right - VIN number ought to have 17 characters, letters and digits, not just 7 - those standards were intdroduced at the beginning of 1980s, and for a bike made in 1993 it should be known

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_identification_number

https://www.autocheck.com/vehiclehistory/vin-basics

197007 for my bike, or 197771 for yours, would just be the last 6 digits in a full VIN no.

Like the modern BMW bikes have  here an example for R1200GS:

https://en.vindecoder.pl/WB10317A86ZR40964

I have 5 K bikes from 1987 - 93, checking my documentation they all  have the short VIN number, apart from the Swiss K1100LT that has 6458537K1100LT .

VIN numbers were initially up to the manufacturer, but later became standardised, with internationally recognised patterns.
For BMW bikes, 7 digits plus the model used to be the pattern, such as 1234567K100RT
The later standardised version starts with WB and has the 17 digit pattern.
I’m not sure when the change was made, but by 1993, as my two 1993 bikes have the later pattern, and without checking, I think the 1990 one has the older pattern.

Accxording to Wikipedia and other pages, 17-character standard (digits and letters) was introduced already in 1981. 7 digits plus the model pattern like 1234567K100RT can not be used on VIN-decoders requiring 17-digit ones. Somebody from flyingbirck.de Forum suggested to add three ziros in front, or WBA, WBS - to no avail, those sites don't recognise it

It was introduced in 1981 in the USA. In Australia, for example it was 1989. You should be able to use your number anyway.

http://bimmer.work/ is one site that can be used, though the second section of results (options fitted) is no longer as accurate as it was before.

When using it:

  • there will be distracting advertising. Only fill in the VIN part, the captcha to detect robots and 'Submit'.
  • Use the leading 7 digits of the 1234567K100RT VIN type, or the trailing 7 digits of the WB1 type.
  • For that site, you don't use the whole VIN

If you look at the RealOEM parts catalog site ( https://www.realoem.com/ ), you also only use the 7 digits as above and it will show model details and production month before you enter the parts catalog section.

"Fahrzeug-Identifizierungsnummer (FIN) (engl. vehicle identification number, VIN)" - according to German Wikipedia, used in Europe too since 1981., after European Union adopted the 76/114/EEC directive

Depends what the law was in the country it was sold.

Switzerland, where your bike was sold,  is not in the EU.
