Below is a Chinese fuel pump available from AliExpress
Does anyone know what the part does that I have circled - could it be a filter or maybe some sort of controller ????
What end of the pump should it be fitted???

Looks like a filter, and if so, should be on the input side to stop contaminants from getting into the pump.

However, by the looks of it, the pump is not intended for in-tank installation, so I would be wary of using it in that way.

Packo there is no need to go down that route. AliExpress has direct copies of the OEM Pump, I've been running one with no problems since July 2017. It has even survived 40C riding for a 3 day 1400 K trip without a complaint. See here. http://www.motobrick.com/index.php/topic,10054.msg85918.html#msg85918

No don't want to use it for the bike, it is for an entirely different application.
I was just wondering what the "small screwy in thing" in the photo was

It looks like an inline filter.

Yeah it is a filter and it is needed as those pumps are very sensitive to particles bigger than 6 micron, they jam and stop pumping.
