A local mate of mine has one of these yeller K1 models. A few years back he popped a K1100RS engine into it & 17" wheels, front & rear, from a K1200RS, using larger wheel bearings & machined hub rather than a new axle & spacers like I did.

I was at the York, PA BMWMOA rally in the summer of '89, the largest they'd ever had at the time (over 9,000 folks & hot as Hades), when they rolled out the K1. A ketchup & mustard & a blue & mustard K1 were ridden round & round the dirt horse oval in front of the Saturday night prize giveaway crowd in the stands. It was a site to behold. Next day BMWNA were doing demo rides on them so I signed up to ride one. I was a die-hard Airhead man in those days so it opened my eyes wide to the possibilities. They are a love 'em or not love 'em motorbike.

I've always thought of the K1 as the red-headed stepchild of the K series - crappy turning radius and minimal storage. And if the ergos don't fit it's not a fun bike to ride.

Buying and owning one changed my mind some though.

I was tryin' to 'splain that to my long-sufferin' girlfriend, being a redhead meself, but she loves me anyway.
