Hi all. I pulled my bike (87K100RS)out the other day after sitting for a couple of years. It would not start and while investigating I checked the fuel tank internals and it looked like a Coral Reef. I have decided to change all internals and I can find the fuel pump and filter and associated mounts and screen but cannot seem to source the float switch? I think it signals low fuel? Can anyone advise me of a search description I can use. Also is there a complete kit of all components available. Thx. Oh also I live in Australia so will need to buy online.

Don't try to move the arm on the fuel sender.  Take the whole thing and put it in a pail with a couple gallons of white vinegar and forget about it for a week or two.  Eventually, most of the corrosion will come off.   Just don't try to move the arm.

Thanks for reply. Might try the vinegar as in no hurry. Will it be brittle anyway? I guess its been submerged in petrol.

The sender has some very fine wires embedded in all that garbage.  If you try to move the arm, you are guaranteed to tear them up which makes the sender useless.  I had to learn this the hard way $$$.

Soak for a week, do a rinse, repeat, repeat.  It's good that you aren't in a hurry.  Almost impossible to find a replacement for under $150, so take your time.

Have bought a new unit from Graham as per link above. And I have the old unit sitting in a tub of vinegar in the shed. New pump and filters and cap gasket set on the way also. Thanks to all for the advice

I just thought I'd add a question. If you don't have a fuel gauge fitted and aren't going to fit one why do you need the winding and the wiper arm. Could it not be just converted simply into a switch to illuminated the low level light?
Regards Martin.

You don't "need" the resistive winding plate or the wiper for those windings. However, you'll still need a functioning float arm because there is a second set of wiper and copper clad plate that activates the low fuel light.

The Trades Guild recommences on a limited basis from Sunday. Only ten members allowed at a time. I've got a few projects to go, a 22Lt top box that I scored was missing the locking pin. And in a case of Catch 22 we were in the process of making new half nuts for my home metal lathe which requires an Acme 5/8" 8TPI which my lathe can do if it had the half nuts. K100 Tank Parts 610153

Jezz I thought I was having fun.I've just finished refurbing my fuel thank components.Hardest thing I had trouble sorcing was the internal fuel hoses.Pirtex had heaps of submersible fuel line at $6.75 a metre. I took 2meters at that price.& it comes in a red colour.

That's a bargain if it was SAE 30R10 high pressure fuel hose, which is what's needed. Did you verify that? It's approximately $30 a meter in the US.

I've never seen the red submersible fuel line, and 12 months or so ago our local Pirtek didn't stock SAE 30 R10 hose. However Motorsport Brendale accessories have the SAE 30 R10 hose for $18.00 Au a metre if you sign up as a member which is free. They also stock a blister pack of the correct EFI hose clips. They will ship.

When I spoke with the Pirtex fellow I did specify submersible fuel hose & fuel injection pressure, also took old hose with me for sample. the new hose has a thicker wall diameter. Inside still the same. I'll check new hose out when down the shed next & post the specs tommorow

It should have the rating marked on the hose SAE 30 R10. For a price comparison try Autobarn they want $100.00 per metre, highway robbery. K100 Tank Parts 314318

First place I went to for the hose was Autobarn,2nd place supercheap next NAPA autoparts. None of these could help me. Sure they had fuel injection hose but not submersible. Then I remembered every time I needed a hose for some plant equipment Pirtex had the answer. When I think more  about it after all thats what they do is manufacture hoses.
Hose is printed as below.
Pirtex, Red Flex Series ll multi-purpose non conductive IRRF-08, 7.9mm 20.7 BAR(300PSI)WP RMA CLASS A OIL RESISTANCE

If you are looking for fuel hoses I get mine in my local Honda dealer. Seems Hondas use the same specs as our K bikes. I only discovered this by accident one day buying oil filters [some Hoindas use the same ones as Ks] for me as someone was in buying fuel line. I noticed he was being given same fuel line as we use on Ks. So I came out with that too. Another day is was exhaust studs and nuts! And spark plugs. Not to mention oil.

Ok. cant seem to source out a new fuel float sender unit for my 1987 K100RS. tried every link and searched everywhere, will try soaking it in vinegar to see if its salvageable but its looking pretty sad. I'm not optimistic, but also super cheap so I'll give it a go. Failing that, is there any reason to not have the guts of the sender unit in the tank? I usually don't trust the fuel guages anyways and track mileage as a backup, so I'm good without a low level light. Kinda clutching at straws for a solution, any suggestions?

There are a few cases of float senders that were salvaged by soaking them.  The key, as I learned the hard way, is to NOT try to move the float until every bit of corrosion is dissolved.

Bottom line is that patience is the main requirement in getting a good outcome if one can be had.

The only function that you need from the float assembly is the gas-tight wire passthrough, specifically the power and ground wires for the fuel pump.  Otherwise all the other functions can be considered extra. You can do without a fuel level indicator and can use your odometer to gauge when to fill up with fuel, doing away with the low fuel indicator.  It's not going to be convenient but it's manageable.  See how it goes removing all the corrosion.

Low fuel on my bikes sets off a lot of whining from the fuel pump due to cavitation when there is about 10-15 miles of fuel left in the tank.  It adds a sense of urgency to the low fuel light.

thanks for the feedback, finding a sender unit is proving to be fun. soaked the old one in vinegar and it came out pretty not crap, but everything apart from the wiring is shot. vinegar took the rust off nice, just showed how broken it was. now has anyone disassembled the plastic connection with the small o ring and wiring soldered to it? just need the fuel pump wiring to get thru and then not have it leak spectacularly. was pondering replacing the small o ring on the wiring connection then if continuity is good will test to see if it hold fuel. as a back up was gonna slather it with any fuel friendly epoxy or goop for good measure. any ideas or feedback? def gonna video it for youtube just in case. cheers B

I would like to see how this turns out and view the video. I've purchased an aftermarket fuel sensor per suggestions by other members here. I've been searching for the OEM fls as well with zilch. They are $325 at euromotoelectrics but are out of stock. I'm going with the set your trip meter solution for now as well.

Try Motorworks in the UK. I know that currently they are out of s/h stock that they are willing to sell as 'fit for use', but an email or phone call will help. They have just sold me me a unit in excellent condition that needed the two ring terminals crimping back on for the fuel pump. It came with a discount too Very Happy

Somebody on ebay is seriously taking the piss. They want £235 for a s/h unit that still needs a bit of cleaning before it can be used. Unfortunately prices will rise as we compete against each other for ever-dwindling stocks. Chris (Suzi Q) has said that he's looking into the problem of sealing the wires as they come into the tank, Charlie99 is looking at the problem of the resistance winding and there's this too:

https://www.k100-forum.com/t16100-cheap-repair-for-fuel-sender-am-i-an-idiot

So, all in all, it's possible that the future looks bright for home-made substitutions.

Just seen the sender unit on oohbay - for two hundred and fifty quid!  cheers.
That is seriously ambitious. No-one needs to know their fuel level that badly.
One could be made from scratch for much less than that.

Most fuel gauge senders use a 0-100 ohm resistance track. If the problem is a broken track, then grafting in the board from a cheapo (and just as good) scooter unit has got to be option. Some even have the extra contact/track for a separate low level warning light too.

Cripes, making up a complete new flange & gubbins in stainless isn't exactly the engineering challenge of the century. The tricky part is sealing the wires as they pass through. But, I reckon there might be a solution to that anyway.

No-one needs to fear anything  Very Happy.
