Just been fettling with my K100RS.
Previous owner had done some electrical repairs to wiring. Poorly done.
On tidying up these repairs it occurred to me, That when wiring my boat I use Liquid electrical tape (brush on,liquid). Available at any good marine chandlery.
Use of this liquid tape is recommended when doing repairs with boats electrics as helps keeps saltwater & corrosion out. Why not use it on my bike?.
Digging in to older wiring repairs/ normal electrical tape the glue on tape had failed & is loose & failing off. Wires are often only twisted together rather than soldied.
So now I've decided on a new method. this will ensure no ingress of water or corrosion. After soldering wires I use the  liquid electrical tape as well as heatshrink. Connection totally sealed.
Hope that's food for thought.
Have Fun, Poddy

Never heard of liquid tape - sounds a worthwhile idea.
I hate electrical 'insulation' tape with a passion. It comes loose in a bike environment (heat, oil) and leaves that sticky mess, you might as well just coat everything with spray glue and dirt. I suppose the only good thing about it is that those tattered, loose, sticky ends flag up previous dodgy wiring fixes.
I've always used the proper Tesa loom tape, and also self amalgamating tape can be useful for extra protection too.

Going to google 'liquid tape'  Smile

It'd be nice if tape could be 'electrical' - no more messy wiring looms.

While you are at the chandlery, get some glue lined heat shrink tubing.  It seals the joint from water with hot melt glue and adds a substantial amount of mechanical strength.  It's also a lot faster than waiting for the liquid tape to cure.  If there is a Harbor Freight store in the neighborhood, they have a nice assortment of glue lined shrink tube in a handy box.

I also use cloth "friction tape" for wrapping bundles of wire into looms.  Relatively heat and oil proof, isn't sticky enough to attract dirt, and doesn't turn to black goo.

Harbor Freight is a California-based, US-only store, but there are near equivalents about in other countries.

Glue-lined heatshrink is only good if it's used somewhere the loom doesn't get moved much. Put it in a high-mobility area (e.g. the handlebars) and it will split eventually and usually at the point where the glue starts. Same goes for bog-standard heatshrink. Not much long-term flexibility in either of them - I learned the hard way.

When made from scratch, I plan my looms so that I can use PVC sleeving the whole way through. If (diety forbid!) I have to repair a wiring loom then it's SAT (self-amalgamating tape) all the way.

I have found Liquid Tape to be very handy in the workshop.  However, the stuff can be frustrating.  It quickly turns to tar in a bottle, no matter how tightly sealed. I think the size of the packaging encourages wastefulness.  It should be available is smaller bottles since you will probably be tossing it out after you take care of a couple of "fixes."
I've tried various chemicals as thinners for Liquid Tape but I have yet to find the magic potion.   Question

Some glues and sealants shelf life can be significantly extended by storing them in the fridge.

Matt wait until you have to glue something and the glue has gone off. You'll be sorry you didn't have a glue fridge. You can't stick things together with beer and wine, although after a few you probably don't care anymore. Electrical tape 8157
