Extra lines at  50 km/h, 150 km/h and 220 km/h whats that about?

On the Imperial speedo 40 mph, 80 mph and 135 mph, that's not a match.

The least dumb idea I'm thinking is in a race third gear would be ideal between 50 and 150, then go straight to fifth until max. revs at about 220 km/h. That's different to Imperial. Can anyone into racing shed light on this?

Not good at refining searches but googled a bit, and found a car speedo (BMW 318) with marks at 130 km/h and 65 km/h (that's half 130) and 40 mph is half of 80. No idea what this means.

40 mph=64 km/h, 80 mph=129 km/h 135 mph=217 km/h. The 135 marks are a bit off centre so maybe say 220 km/h, so at least that's about the same.

I'll guess the metric speedos are the same in all countries with metric, and same with imperial.

I've got a vague thought the speed limits in Germany were  50 max. in towns and 150 min. in the second lane on the autobahns, yep that's another crappy guess, doesn't meld with the car speedo.

Can anyone shed any light, or any more confusion?

The 50 km/hr is probably a European thing as that is a common speed limit there compared to our 60 km/hr here.

yeah i guess the same , for us aussies the local in town speed limit was bumped up from 35 to about 40 mph with the metric conversion taking hold (60 kph ) , but many countries was 35 mph

just like back in the 60s , you couldnt find a speedo  in any vehicle that read above 80 miles an hour , by law in many counties ,  even if the top speed of the vehicle  was way above that ....

I believe they're calibration marks.

OK I think the calibration answer ticks all the boxes.

From another thread I've just read that the speedo may have been checked for accuracy at different frequencies to fall within the extra lines.

Thanks everyone.

Perhaps it's just more things to do/enquire about/puzzle over during lockdown...

Yep it's one of those things I probably shouldn't wonder about but sometimes did. Aren't these forums great where you can point to something so small and get help to understand it.

That's the power of thousands of brick riders putting our heads together to help each other out.

All right!
Now, shall we take up the question of the horizontal orange lines on the headlight covers of the R100RS and R100RT models?   Razz

I was thinking what do the numbers mean below the tripmeter k=4784 etc.

I have it on good authority these are indeed calibration marks.  These are used to check the calibration of the speeds in a production environment.

Prior experience is the lines are used for calibration. The needle should match the line when a certain (frequency) signal is applied.

That K number is to calibrate the distance. I used that factor for my motometer conversion.
