I have bought myself a beautiful 1987 BMW K100LT in Bronzit Beige Metallic

This bike was a one owner, and has all original documentation from the original purchase through much of the service history.

I'm in the process of deciding which tires I should put on at the moment, as well as sorting out a few other things.

This is my first ever BMW motorcycle, so I'm really not sure what to expect, but I am very excited!

Oh lovely someone just joining and starting a tyre thread.....

Having fun, thats a nice K and a great bike to get you started. My first BM happened to be one of the last K100LT made and I still have it and added more as time passed.

Did you get a Haynes or Clymer manual in the papers? Useful reading. On the portal page here there is a section on if you have just bought a K bike, have a read and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Once you have 3 posts you can pop up some photos. Tell us a bit about the bike, mileage etc, has it been parked up unused etc

Welcome!  Bricks are among the most reliable motorcycles made if maintained.  The really good news is that they are pretty easy to keep up.  All the information you need is here.

Haha, seems I've come in a bit hot to this forum, as I see tire threads are a point of contention / opinion, but I hope it's all in good fun!

The bike was acquired at an estate sale, as a one owner. Last inspection is from 2015. It has custom paint and says "Woody" on the side (already have a name!). Sure enough, looking into the original documentation, it was purchased locally by someone with the last name "Woodbury" so the story seems to add up. I bought it from the person who bought it from the estate sale.

The front brakes are a little touchy / inconsistent as you're coming to a stop, so that will need to be dealt with, and I'm having the tires replaced tomorrow (see my other post) and I've already replaced the low beam bulb (thank goodness it wasn't the switch, as a read what a nightmare those can be to fix), but other than these issues it seems that it's all there, and running. Oil and fluids have been changed recently.

All in all I'm looking forward to fully sorting this bike and enjoying what it has to offer. My purchase price was low, and I hope to make this a budget build. I've also been looking around at different people who have taken off the front fairing, which is quite tempting I must say. I once owned a cafe racer (already done up when I bought it) but it was a Honda 200, which is certainly a far cry from the K100 !

Hi Everyone 177912  If you don't want the switch to fail fit relays. If you want to start a lengthly debate try the following subjects. What oil, spline lube, injectors are best? Hi Everyone 652573
Regards Martin.

Hi rclarkbow,Nice to have you join us even  though you've touched on muddy waters Shocked  So let me help you with more, affraid If the K has stood for a long time or is high millage, you may like to try Engine oil mix with diesel for internal cleaning,BUT ONLY if you understand HOW/WHY and use a strong cleaning diesel engine oil for 1k miles or so.All this to avoid/cure starter sprag issues and clean all parts others can't reach.Dont be exited be prepared to be GOBSMACKED. lol!

As a young kid the rules one had to learn in polite society...don't talk about sex, politics and religion...

They never mentioned tyres, engine oil and batteries.

Reminds me I bought 20w50 oil for my K1100LT today.....€26 at the Honda dealer. [sits back  Very Happy ]
