This gap:

Betwixt side panel and rear unit:

Need to close it up by 20mm for a good fit. I note that this gap seems to be present in all K pictures, even on the front of the Clymer manual. But mine's so bad the side panel peg doesn't stay located in the rear unit.

Before I start filing slots in the rear unit mountings, am I missing something?

All my K's have it also, and lots of K's I've seen.

As well as every K that has passed through my garage.  Some gaps have been quite large.

My 86 k100 has "doesn't look right" gap as well, not quite that extreme.

We all have 'the gap', but that looks too much.  scratch

I would check the position of the seat hump. The fibron wears over time and if the hump has been removed at any point, it's possible that it's been replaced as the rearmost position. The alternative is that the fuel tank can be moved back. You have a gap between the seat and that tank which suggests either the hump or the tank is not in the optimum place.
