Hi there,

I've recently bought a '96 K1100RS and plan on taking it apart, servicing it, and (hopefully) putting it back together for a second life on the road.

Welcome. Good luck, I've got five bricks, most weren't used for years when I got them, but they all came back to life with just minimal problems, although finding the problem isn't always minimal.
