Hi All,
Awkward question, but what is the male power takeoff plug for BMW motorcycles called or parts number? I'm referring to the rather odd cigarrette lighter like power plug that is used to power things like heated garments or used for charging the battery. There are usually two female versions on the bike, one on the dash and the other just by the battery. I'm looking for a source for purchase so I can connect my battery charger and plug it in without having to access the battery directly.

thanks.
J

They're called Merit plugs and they can be found at electronics stores and some automotive and marine supply stores.
Regards Martin.

Over here (which is not over there, admittedly) they're known as Hella plugs....if it helps.

Powerlet will have everything that you want.  You can either purchase directly from them or from many places that they supply to.

They used to be known as Hella plugs in the late '70s & early '80s in Los Estados Unidos, too, but then that upstart Powerlet began supplying all manner of plugs, leads & connectors (as well as excellent heated gear) to the powersports biz and now they've glommed onto the right to be called Powerlet, it seems.

The local John Deere tractor seller used to have them for heaps cheaper than your average Beemer wheeler dealer. It might still be worth enquiring.

If you ask the average American where you can buy a Merit plug you might get a strange look, similar to if you ask them where Botswana or Uruguay is.

A lot of them can't find their own state on a map where the states are labeled.

It's not their fault though, I understand that it's because teachers aren't paid more than elite professional athletes.

My dad, who was the American part of me, and himself an often underpaid educator, illuminated for us his belief that the geographically challenged nature of some Americans was because they'd had ingrained from birth that they lived at the top of the heap and that this insular way of thinking kept them from needing to pay attention to the world around them, beneath them. To make his point he noted the average half hour of World News Tonight included more about a barn fire in Iowa or a runaway train in Michigan than about people fleeing the DDR and being shot trying to escape over the wall.

ISO 4165 is a standard adopted by the International Organization for Standardization  (ISO). It describes a double-pole DC  connector to supply between 12 and 24 V DC at up to 12 amps  to appliances in vehicles . It is similar in design to a cigar  lighter receptacle, but is shorter and smaller in diameter. It was originally a standard fitting on all the German military vehicles during World War II .
The current version of the standard is ISO 4165:2001Other names for this connector include:

  • BMW Accessory plug, used on BMW motorcycles

  • Powerlet connector, named after a firm that produces them

  • Hella plug or Merit plug, in Australia

Absolutely! I would doubt that even 5% of the population even watches a news program, so it wouldn't really matter what was covered.

Another reason may be that the U.S. is isolated by two oceans, so it isn't easy to travel to other cultures. For most people it's a once in a lifetime thing to just do two weeks in Europe. For most, holidays are spent in a Disney theme park or a casino complex a couple hundred miles from home. A lot of men have seen other parts of the world courtesy of the military. As a veteran, I can say that it can be pretty hard to get a favorable view of a country from a U.S. military base, especially if it's in a hot zone. The locals hate you, and you just want to do your time so you can get back home and forget about it.

TWB, knowing your approximate age, I would hazard a guess that your dad taught before the teacher's unions got as powerful as they are now. It wasn't that long ago when schools that now pay 6 figures weren't paying teachers enough to survive the summer.

Funny thing, literacy and math skills tested better back when your dad was teaching than they do now. My daughter-in-law, who is a high school graduate with no college, home schools our grandsons. Both of them test 3 grades or better in all their subjects on standardized achievement tests. "Unfortunately", neither has been taught how to perform oral sex, install a condom or how evil their white middle class parents are.

There be truth in your observations, and, well, in order to get even a taste of something different, there is Mexico/Central America to the south and that wonderful, not quite-American culture to the north...and not a trip too far or even overseas. Yet still you often here the proclamation from well-meaning souls, "There's so much to see here in the states, why should I go overseas?"

I knew a woman from western Massachusetts who lived in Williamsburg and hadn't been so far as in-state to Springfield, 25 miles away,  or interstate to Brattleboro in her fifty-odd years until her husband flew her to Disney World.

My dad was a music professor Down Under (graduate of Boston Uni School of Music prior to the '56 Olympics where he ran marathon in Melbourne) from the late '50s thru the mid-seventies, so not the same scenario as in the states. I do know that when he returned to the US, sweeping us up and along for the trip for our first time, he refused to teach any longer as he felt educators had drifted towards becoming akin to glorified babysitters due to lack of what he perceived as parental backbone and a lack of support for teachers from home. He was plenty cynical about a lot of things - which didn't fall far from the family tree - but his appreciation of unions as a bulwark against domination of working folks by corporations probably came from that model of socialism, Australia, nudge, wink, and the fact that his dad was a loyal and hard-working union member in the Draper woolen mills in Canton, Mass for all of his adult life.

I use both Powerlet AND Hella male plugs and female accessory sockets in my battery chargers and heated riding gear for my Beemers, and there might even be an Australian-sourced Merit plug from my years riding back home, too. How'd I do bringing it back to the original thread!?
