The current tank is dented and in need of repainting.

I plan to strip the replacement tank down so it an be professionally primed and painted, so paint color or condition is not important. I just need one that does not leak or is dented.

Thanks

Ric

I found a member with a tank for less than this, but not in as nice a shape.
I was not concerned with year or model, for my needs, but I think the 85 has slightly different mounts than 86. Not the best deal, just best I've seen at the moment.

You need to check your existing tank first as the early and later ones are not interchangeable.

Does yours have a bolted flange at the front of the seat? If so it is early tank. These are hard to get in good condition so may be better to repair your existing tank.

Another clue is of you have 2 fuel lights orange for 7l and red for 4l, later ones have a single fuel light for 5l.

If the dent isn't too bad you could shop around to a few paintless dent repair(A.K.A. PDR) guys. The aluminum of the tank is pretty easy to pull dents out of, and these guys can do some amazing work. Around here, they can usually be found advertising at car washes and shops that do auto detailing. A lot of collision shops now have a guy on staff who does that work as well.

I appreciate the info, and am pursuing that avenue.  I agree, it seems like my best bet.

Stunning paintjob on the bike in your avatar!
