Have been given an '87 K100RT - parked in dry storage at high altitude for 20+ years.

Was told it was dropped and parked - but found a bunch of "monkeywork" not completed, so have now gotten it running reasonably.

The bike has the adjustable windshield, but the lowers, radiator surround, intake tubing, side covers are all missing, mirror broken, etc.

But! It only has 21k miles or so. Dirty injectors, total mess in the tank (new pump and all plumbing and a serious cleanout), missing tank connectors and burned up fuel level sender.

Not sure what else I'll find, but I rode it after changing all fluids and lubing the rear drive splines. Did just fine (just big!)

Got some saddlebags recently, not sure what'll be next.

Got my "new to me", "20 year barn find" 87 K100 RT up and going. Took it to 80mph, smooth as glass, but that was "enough".

Usual troubles - dissolved in-tank pump mount, dead pump, crunchy lines, clogged injectors, removed (failed) tank electrical connector, fried fuel level sender. (prior owner seemed a bit ham fisted). Final tweak was removal of the high-altitude jumper bike was brought from Colorado - to the Carolinas... Idle settled right down.

Couple of questions for the group:

1). Fuel pressure. Currently have a pressure gauge in the line. Bike runs as it should despite pressure fluctuating +/- 10% (needle wiggling). When shut off, it drops rapidly to zero. Should the pressure drop immediately or remain up for a bit? How long is "a bit"? My suspicion is a dodgy FP regulator. Thoughts?

2). Later model fairing retrofitted? This bike was owned by the owner of a BMW dealership. Appears to have electric windscreen from 1990 or later added and rubberized "wings" that mount to the outside edges of the RT fairing. Is this fairing an add-on or was it offered as option on the 87 K100RT?

3). What next? Missing a few bits - lowers on fairing, knee pads, etc. Should I: buy up parts and go back to full RT fairing? Or try to build out "bare bike" (I like the look) but the parts are hard to find. I could look for an RS fairing, but they seem hard to find also. I won't cafe it. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance. BTW, may be selling this now that it's running well - (I want K75 - smaller/smoother bike). This one has only about 22k miles on it.

Have you cleaned the fuel injectors? A sticky injector will let fuel leak out of the rail when the engine is shut down, dropping the pressure faster. On my bikes the pressure can take anywhere from 2-3 seconds to 10 seconds or more to drop to zero.

What is your fuel pressure? Should be around 35psi. A little wiggling of the needle at idle wouldn't concern me if the engine was running smoothly, the vacuum connection to the regulator could be causing a little bit of pressure instability. Check the vacuum on the cylinder #4 throttle body at idle. I'll bet that the needle on the vacuum gauge is bouncing around like the fuel pressure.

Fairing parts should be pretty easy to find with all the K bikes being hacked up these days. You should be able to find everything you need on eBay. If you want to do a RS fairing, I have most of the parts for an 1100 RS fairing like the one in my avatar that I might want to get rid of. If you want them I could probably bring them down to North Carolina on a visit to my daughter who live outside of Charlotte.

Hi Bill, the 75s are only a handful of Kilos lighter, ride Hight ect are the same,I ride both and dont find much difference with smoothness, You might find it difficult to find another as good as you have,Mabe a good think is in order before you make the decision scratch

Injectors are cleaned and squirting evenly.

Pressure drops to zero in zero.zero seconds. New regulator ordered.

I'm above 35 PSI - we'll see what the regulator does.

Re Fairing parts, now that's something to think about... [and I will!].

I have another RS fairing (period correct) and am taking a look at it as well.

Thanks for the inputs. Sounds like I'm going to get this whipped.

Are all the hose clamps in the fuel tank snug so there are no leaks at the fuel pump or filter? You would not be the first one to have a leaky hose connection at the filter.

Another slim possibility. There's a one way valve in the output of the fuel pump to maintain pressure at shutdown. If some gunk gets in fuel might back out the pump at shutdown.

Have you got a photo of the rubber wings?

Yep could be the valve. More likely, crap went downstream into the reg. Someone tried to get this running sometime in the last 20 years and smoked a couple of wires to the tank. Guessing they managed to pump gunk into the rail and nether regions beyond. Will do the reg and try that.

I have a photo here of the "wings" - haven't seen them elsewhere. The electric bugscreen is a clue that the original owner, who owned a dealership, may have brought these parts to this bike from a later model.

I can't see the photo of the fairing vent wings but I'm pretty sure they are off of a K100LT (1986+). I have them on my '85 K100RT and I'm sure they were a later add on.

The black rubber surrounds the mirrors and goes all the way to the end of the fairing. It has recess in the end, like it continued down the lowers as well. I've not seen this anywhere else. Also, the electric windscreen suggests something in the 89-93 range... Agree, probably a dress-up option on the LT.

Hopefully the previous owner removed the lower panels for easier services and still has them, cause they're half of a special kit, or maybe there's some ID on them somewhere.

Dunno why, but the aging memory cells say that was a Luftmeister kit. Someone else, somewhere on here posted a similar picture.

Unfortunately, the person who removed them is long gone... No idea where the lowers wound up. Bummer.

I can't find anything on the Luftmeister "wings" - but it looks very well made, like factory? The combination with the electric windshield from a 9x K1100 makes for a really nice ride.

Happy to report that replacing the fuel pressure regulator fixed it all up. I cross-referenced, found the right pressure and mount, put it in, and voila. Bike runs great.

Doesn't appear to be id on them anywhere - others have identified them as part of a "Luftmeister kit" - but Google, in it's all-knowing, doesn't know.

Good news is that I bought a nearly complete fairing with a straight mount, etc. off of eBay recently. Missing only about 2 pieces. Now to get her painted.

Well, after a bunch of replacements - basically everything with the word "fuel" in it, pump, filter, injectors, regulator, hoses, etc., it runs like a singer sewing machine.

Have been riding it a bit - and picking up parts for the original RT fairing - though some have offered RS fairings and I was sorely tempted, but...

This bike sure beats the heck out of my old Honda CX500 from 30 years ago (the last bike I owned).

Anyway, thanks, all for the suggestions. When I move back to Colorado soon, I'm looking forward to some mountain riding, some cleaning, a lot of sanding and some painting.

Sounds like you're well on your way to getting another old brick into great shape. Miles and miles of great riding out where you are, the western Colorado mountains are one of my favorite places to ride. Good luck on the restore!

I am, however, for paint thinking of a "clone" of the SE paint job - blue over white... Thoughts?

I like the blue and white special edition paint scheme. The Bermuda blue of the BMW factory paint scheme is my favorite, but the Pearlmutt(mother of pearl) they used doesn't really do it anymore. The gold tint in the mid coat makes the white look discolored and dirty, sort of like plastic that has turned yellow in the sun. I think that part of the reason all the paints of the era used that gold tint was to hide the fact that the clear coats of the day either had a yellow cast to them or they had a tendency to yellow in the sun's ultraviolet.

When I did the bike in my avatar I used two late model Ford colors. I picked Ford because the Mystic red on my K75RT was a very close match to Ford's Red Fire tricoat. The blue is Ford Dark Blue Metallic which has a tiny bit of red/purple in it which makes it less of a true blue like the Bermuda blue. When the two blues are put side by side the Bermuda blue looks so much better to me.

The white I used was Ford's Platinum White tricoat. It has a bright silvery white with a nice depth and softness to edges. If I was to do another "special edition" paint job, it would be the Platinum white with the Bermuda blue.

Hi got you're PM, My K100RS was delivered as a Special Italian Edition. hence slitly different paint scheme.think its styled on BMW badge. Regards Gary

Didn't know it was styled on the logo, but that's good clue on the shades of blue and white "blau mit weiss" used.

Am contemplating what to squirt on my 100RT when I get all the parts all sanded and gorgeous...

However mine's an RT and that paint job existed only on RS bikes it would seem, so am "going slightly rogue"... It's either blue/white SE paint or Marakesch Red... (or Porsche Guards Red... perhaps).

Can't decide.

Or just assemble the parts looking like a multi-colored quilt and ignore the disapproving looks!

Interesting.

User "poddy" suggests that the paint may be chosen to match the BMW logo. Seems odd as the logo is not pearlescent.

May go forward with an "RT-itized" version of the blue top layout. Love it. Or just get a few cans of Marakesch Red (or heck, Porsche Guards Red) and start squirting... (er.... sanding.... and sanding... and sanding ... and eventually squirtring).

Compliments of another user who has access to BMW records -

The "Wingy Thingies" are part of the "comfort spoiler modification" offered by BMW. I've seen it offered from 86 to 92 so far, on the K100 and K75s.

And with that name in hand, Google turns up a BMW parts page for the kit parts.

And I think I found the parts I'm missing in Europe 188 euros each... Ouch.
