Is the LAST DAY OF MY WORKING LIFE EVAH!!!!!!!!!

My employer was going to outsource me to a non-UK company, but that turned out to be not feasible. So they made me and around sixty or seventy others redundant instead. First, it was to be middle of November. Then it was to be May next year. Then it was finally the 31st December. By this time I'd had enough, so when they asked for volunteers to go pretty much immediately, I and just about everyone else involved couldn't say 'me!' fast enough. Some poor sods were then earmarked to stay Sad after originally being told they were being made redundant.

At my age I'm never gonna get another job, so Her Indoors suggested that I officially retire when I get made redundant. I'm never one to turn down a good idea - especially when the financial tally and the future purseholder agreed with it - so I'm out three years and three months early.

Not sorry.

Not.Sorry.In.The.Slightest.

Great news. Congrats from someone who’s been there twice, second time after my recent 6 month stint on the census. Good feeling both times, though the census work helped the play money. Just got to get used to my normal income again!
Enjoy. Very Happy

Good luck with the retirement Dai - from all accounts, life only gets busier from the point of stopping paid employment. Enjoy it while you can!!

So the Eccentric gathering on 28th Dec is the last one that you can say “Sorry - working (again)” for.

Congrats Dai! I got made redundant in November 2020 when the furlough scheme was going to very definitely end (grrr) and have been loving it ever since. Shame I'll have to go back to work at some point though.

Enjoy yourself!

As per the members above Dai, all the best with turning the page. You'll find that you're giving up 5 days (or however many you have been working) of paid employment for 7 days of unpaid work. The benefit comes in the ability to manage your life more to suit yourself and family.

If ever I get brave enough to travel internationally again my first stop will be the UK to visit my daughter and family in Hampshire and then hopefully pick up BAE and head around the traps on two wheels for a bit which must include the northern part of Ireland as my only trip to the Emerald Isle so far was confined to south of the M6.

Cheers mate! Enjoy.

Chuffed for you.
I'm five years in, and it's still a thrill everyday to feel that freedom. Of course, you might find yourself becoming the 'family resource', but that'll only be because you're still healthy and capable. Best time of your life, even with the creaks and the occasional age-related stupidity. Enjoy!  cheers

I didn't dislike my job - it's very nature meant that most days I'd have no idea what problems were going to arise, where in the world they would be or who I was going to talk to. It was never boring - except between Thanksgiving and the end of January when America went quiet. India, on the other hand... never went quiet Laughing but the Aussies behaved themselves at the right times of the year; gotta give them that Twisted Evil

Much the same story. I was within 18 months of US retirement age, 67, my supervisor came in one day and said we need to have a talk. You don't seem happy. It was a total surprise. I looked up at her (she's a Russian emigre and very nice) and without even thinking about it, said "You're right! Would you fire me?" i.e. make me redundant. She was right, I had recently gone through an unexpected divorce, had been on the receiving end of several road rage incidents, come close to being killed in one auto near hap and generally my head wasn't quite right. The thought of six months on unemployment/redundancy pay getting it back together appealed. So we agreed on a two week grace, last day I brought in a Bar-B-Que lunch for my co-workers. Let them know what I had been doing and passed over my projects. Never looked back except to say they were nice folks. The six months of unemployment pay turned into 12 months due to the economy tanking at that point. And at the end of it I was a few months away from qualifying for US Social Security (retirement) which paid a bit more than unemployment and I had learned that I could manage quite nicely on unemployment without taking any of my retirement funds. So the question was did I want to go back to employment. Huh?? I was way too busy to go looking for another job, had enough money to live quite nicely, several motorcycle projects and had taken on a job - which I made sure was unpaid - as executive director for a non-profit. Yeah retirement is as busy as you like.

Best wishes. Stay busy and stay on the bike.
