Hey Everyone!

My brother-in-law gave me an alarm for my '85 K100RS for Christmas, and I'm wondering if I can make it work. It's not the one specifically for the k100. It's made for the R bikes, but I figured I'd see if I can make it work anyway.

Unfortunately, my German is nicht gut, my understanding of electronic schematics is even worse, and the English of the person who translated the installation instructions is even worse than that.

I realize this is a long shot, but what the heck?

Here's what I have.
Here's a pic (maybe) of the schematic of the unit
I'm not totally sure the schematic is of this unit since it's not part of the main manual. It's on an additional insert that was in the box. Also, it lists one of the inputs as 'blau', but there is no blue wire. Hmmm.

The alarm is motion-activated, so what I'm thinking is that if I put 12 volts to one of the inputs and ground to another, then connect the spade connector outputs to the included horn there's a decent chance it'll work, right? But there are four inputs, red black green brown. Positive to red, ground to brown?

If none of you have a better idea I'll try that, but I thought I'd check first to see if any of you geniuses have a better idea.

So, what do you think?

-Jon

There's no reason why it shouldn't fit a K but...

1. The 'schematic' is a circuit diagram of the inside of the alarm box
2. The 4-pin connector is not OEM. It's been replaced with an aftermarket Lucas (6.25mm) terminal connector block
3. It looks like you're probably missing the tilt-switch.

Pics of the inside of the instruction manual?

Dunno zilch about electronics, so consider this last. I'm thinking you also need to connect switched power (green) so it has a way of knowing the bike is being started by the owner with a key, and not being stolen.

The label on the box is enough to make a bloke think it's OK for R and K models.

If the switch is in - out rather than left - right, it probably wants to be in for the alarm to be off.

Another vote for some more instruction pics.

Hi,
   Okay, more photos!
First set of pictures for the directions
Second set of pictures for the directions
First page English directions
Second page English directions
Close-up 1 of the connector
Close-up 2 of the connector

  Replies:
   Dai,
1- Yes, I figured that was the case. The only thing that makes me wonder is that the diagram mentions a blue wire when there is no blue wire.
2- That's weird! Even weirder is that I have two of them, both like that  Laughing . My brother-in-law ordered one on ebay and received two. So he gave them both to me. Both are identical and in original boxes with same instructions, same hardware, etc., yet both have that connector. Hmmm
3- I took a look inside the main module. There are tilt-switches in it.

   Daveyson,
It might have originally been smart enough to know if the bike was being started with a key. I bet it also originally turned on hazard lights while sounding the horn, but those details are beyond the scope of my ambition. All I'd like to achieve is to wire this thing to power so that when I flip its switch (mounted in a hidden place) it's active and then before I start the bike up I'll switch it off. If someone moves my bike while it's on it blasts its horn. Just that would be added peace of mind while on touring trips.

-Jon

In the first photo, do the two white plugs clip together? Were the instructions with the harness or the box, or all together? Is it that the harness makes it compatible with R models, cause I'm wondering why no instructions for K models. The plug in the drawing looks different to the one you have.

Thanks Arlina - that at least matches with what I was thinking. So... the two four-pin connectors need to be matched up. The easiest way to do that is to find a four-way female Lucar terminal block; cheap and easy on ebay. However, my analog electronics has gone right down the pan and I'm struggling to read the circuit diagram. I suspect that Robmack or Charlie99 might be a white knight here.

Had my eyes on the diagram, don't think that diagram belongs to this alarm.....

Would like to know what color wires actually come out of that box, and wich one are connected in the connector.
Guess +12V , -12V , extra wire to the original claxon, and the fourth in the connector dunno.

Could you make good pics of the German pages, and send it to me?

I had something like that on my Honda 500-4 years back.

I did not use the standard horn but a separate one simply in case someone thought to disconnect it to silence it.

You may possibly find you can wire it into the ignition using the parking light setting by splitting the parking wiring out to power the alarm. You then need to put the switch on the parking light circuit but my guess is you dont use the parking light much for that to be a nuisance.

Daveyson,
The plugs don't connect. It looks from the photo that Arlina posted that they're intended to. I might, as Dai suggested, change the other block to a matching Lucas.

Arlina,
Here's the breakdown of wires coming out of the box:
Green - straight to the Lucas connector
Black - straight to the connector
Brown - straight to the connector
White - Goes to the spade connector shown connected to the horn in the photo you posted
First red wire - Goes to the second horn spade connector
Second red wire - Goes to the switch and then to the Lucas connector

I'll post the photos of the German instructions at some point, but it's kind of a pain and I don't have time right now.

Olaf,
I could connect it as you suggest, but I'm leaning more and more toward connecting this thing directly to the battery and mounting it in the box under the seat. I could turn it on with the switch only when I need it (rarely). The switch would only be accessible by opening the seat with a key, giving decent security. When turned off there would be no current draw. I don't feel any need to connect it to the bike's main horn as the instructions suggest. I've tested the included horn and it's plenty loud.
I think this should be pretty straightforward. The main thing I'm struggling with now is how exactly to connect this to the battery. The instructions are clear about connecting red to positive and brown to negative. Black is supposed to be connected to the main bike horn, so I think I can ignore that. But the instructions say to connect green to positive for some bikes and to negative for other bikes. That seems weird to me. Should I just ignore green? I would just start experimenting, but I don't want to fry any electronics.

   -Jon

I was also surprised by the green wire being positive and negative, that makes me think the two R models are very different. I think your suggestion to ignore it is safe.

Are you sure the instructions are for your alarm, cause your alarm is suitable for K and R models, but the instructions are only for R models.

I'm wondering if the extension cable is to make a different alarm compatible with R models (which your instructions are for) and there should be another one making it compatible with the alarm socket on K models.

So I finally just hooked power up to the thing (positive to red, ground to brown, all others ignored), and it works! That's all it needs! It's all installed now in the under-seat box. The switch is coming out the side of the box, accessible when you remove the side panel. Flip the switch, wait 15 seconds, and then the smallest movement of the bike makes the horn start honking. Perfect!

My only concern is that if someone tries to steal my bike they'll drop it when the horn starts blaring. But I guess a bike on its side is better than a stolen bike, right?  Very Happy

Plus, I still have a complete bonus kit still in the box. Excellent!

-Jon
