Could someone explain to me how the retracting device works on the side stand? Mine doesn't retract unless I push it back into place with my foot!

Thanks, Martin

If properly adjusted it works in two ways. It prevents you pulling in the clutch whilst the bike is on the jiffy and putting it into gear and the other way is that if you sit on the bike (jiffy no longer on the ground) and you would pull the clutch the jiffy will be pulled back. Hope that clarifies.

thanks for that, and then mine is not working properly as I can put the bike in gear with the stand down and nor does it retract.

So the next question is how is it adjusted?

My two cents worth...
I always retract the sidestand manually because I believe the clutch cable would last longer due to less strain.

The download section has the Workshop Manual and in there you'll find it mentioned on page 41.

Have a look at the photo and you'll get an idea on how to adjust the linkage. Keep it well lubricated.

My Two Cents Worth is that not all K 100 RS's had self retracting side stands. Check to see if yours has the cable going to the sidestand if it does not, like mine does not, then it is working correctly Very Happy

Indeed, the earlier bikes went without. There isn't a cable going to the side stand, there's an arm fitted on the clutch operating lever shaft (the part hat's sticking out on the left side) that will pull the side stand over its 'dead' point with an adjustable threaded end and some little catch plate on the side stand once you pull the clutch.

Thanks, but which manual are you referring to as there are three!

Whoa folks,
please don't put links to the download section on/in the open web pages which are cruised by bots and other non members, instead the person who wants a file should go to the download section and follow the process including login in to download the file.
Regards,
K-BIKE

My mistake for underlining it. It was never meant to be a link.

I wouldn't place a link here anyway for the reason K-BIKE has mentioned and at the request of Crazy Frog.

It was underlined just to draw your attention to the correct Manual.

Sorry for the confusion.

My older bike does not have the auto-retract mechanism.

But it does have a spring to pull it up and hold it up after I give it a gentle nudge with my foot.

Are you sure the spring hasn't broken perhaps or disconnected itself somehow from the relevant connection points Martin?

There is also a special plate affair (not sure what it is called) which gives the whole action of extending and retracting of the stand its proper function (the spring connects to it).

Perhaps yours is worn?

It is easy enough to remove the whole lot, clean it all up and refit making sure everything is where it should be (take lots of photos on the way so you are sure where things go when you put it all back).

Interesting. My 1986 K100RT has it, though the adjustment had been backed off to the point that it didn't work when I bought the bike. When I put everything back together after the gearbox replacement, I adjusted the clutch and sidestand retract mechanism in accordance with the instructions in my Haynes manual and it all works beautifully.

In fact with all clutch and drivetrain splines cleaned and lubricated and the same for all the clutch mechanism bearings, my K100 has about the lightest clutch pull of the seven bikes in my garage. Gear changes are nice and smooth too.

I have read this topic with great interest, having returned to riding a bike after a few years I have just bought a 1991 Ex-Police K100LT, I have viewed page 41 of the Haynes download but, could do with some help.

My side stand folds away as soon as you take the weight of the bike off of it not, as a result of pulling in the clutch, for someone like me who is vertically challenged it was a bit of a surprise I cannot remeber my 1985 K100RT doing this. Is there a way of stopping the stand from doing this.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Ken

There are two types of spring mechanism to retract the stand one goes over centre to lock the stand down and the other not quite over centre so that the stand retracts when you remove the weight of the bike from it. Where the side stand pivots there is a small half moon piece that curls around the back end of the pivot bolt it is those that are different. Your friendly wrecker may have one of the correct ones.

Just to cofuse people, my 10/83 came with a retractable stand, but not connected to the clutch. The stand would come up as soon as the weight was taken off the stand. To put it down you had to keep your foot on it till the weight went back on. This became scary as I felt I would go over with the bike.

I removed a bolt that was used as a pivot point. Now I have a side stand that I use as side stand....got rid of that new fangled technology.

Thanks for the replies I'll have a look at the weekend, I like the sound of being able to just remove that pivot bolt so I will see if I can ID it on mine.

Many thanks robmack for this info, I contacted Motorworks this morning they have the part No.4 and it is on its way to me to change my No.12, all for a mere £1 plus postage.

Thanks to everyone who answered my post, going to enjoy being a member of this forum cheers
