Hi Brick Fans,

I'm doing the dreaded water pump make over today, but I'm not too sure about this. The shaft looks a bit too rooted for my likings.

Is this too shagged?




Would have loved to finish this today was gonna get out for a couple of days on the cycle as I'm on a week off.

Opinions?

It's a good chance that the oil seal would leak, or at least gonna get a
rather short lifetime.

this is what I suspected, the closest replacement to me here is the shaft alone without the cog (gear).

Is it a case of getting the old cog pressed to the new shaft by a machine shop or such?

If you gonna have a machine shop to make a new shaft, I would let them
do the work with changing the gear from the old to the new shaft, too.

I was going to buy THIS one. But I'm guessing that the gear is pressed on?

Sorry, I'm just not familiar with this stuff.

Looks that you have to make the threads, too.
Or more likely the newer type with a screw instead of a nut.

And yes, the gear is pressed on, it's also shown here in a earlier thread(s).

When they look like that I put them in the lathe and polish the shaft then I can see clearly if the area where the seal runs is damaged because any discolouration is removed.
I come across about 1 in 3 that can be reused and I have had one in my K1100 for near 4 years now without problems.
It's always worth a try even if you do the clean up by hand or in an electric drill.
That said if you aren't sure put a new shaft in and at $150 and stainless you cant go wrong.

I have a small lathe that may be capable Rick. I'm not sure that I'd be such a great judge of what's within a usable state, bloody hell I'm still scratching my head trying to work out where the oil goes through it and where the water goes!
That groove concerns me just down from the gear.

To me it looks like the oil seals have had its position in the deepest groove in
the shaft, but that shouldn't be any problem to measure at the pump body.

If there is a groove you can detect with your fingernail after the shaft has been cleaned then it is RS. Quite often some discolouration or material left from a non lubricated seal will disguise a good shaft or the exposed part of the shaft is pitted by rust but the seal lip position is OK.
I have at times used a shaft that has a groove with success but only after careful inspection and considering the cost of a new shaft, which on some machinery can be in the 10s of thousands of dollars. It's sort of a " captains call"

That is the old type shaft which uses a nut on the threaded end. Regardless of the condition of this shaft it should be replaced with the later type which is threaded internally to take a bolt, because the threaded end on the old type shaft is highly likely to shear off when you tighten the nut on it. This means you end up breaking the new water pump seal when you have to remove the shaft from the pump to do what you should have done in the first place.

All done Avenger, I got the new shaft and had the old gear pressed on today. 
Tomorrow we seal.

Grrrrrrrrr!

I made the mistake of pressing the shaft through the seal with a vice using the pump housing to press against, not the seal. Result my very own exploded view of an expensive seal.

Noob mechanic question;   
 I have a replacement water seal that should be here today, but I didn't even think of re-ordering the oil seal. Will it be cactus from being penetrated (teehee) by the shaft and then withdrawing the shaft again?

ie. should I replace the oil seal as well before I re-assemble?
It seems as though this job was dreaded with reason.

Shouldn't be any problem to reuse the oil seal, a lightly oil coated shaft
will prevent the lips from being destroyed .
