Hi guys

I am having a problem on my 89 K75s. Bad starting etc. Eventually traced it down to a bad connection from the battery positive terminal (good at the terminal, but bad about 2 inches down which was covered with insulation tape). Fixed that, but it created another problem. Started first time, but the starter motor doesn't turn off (even with the key out and the kill switch in off position). Indicators and horn don't work either. Checked the Starter Relay since I have heard this is often the problem if it sticks. Relay is fine, can see it going on and off when i hit the starter button. But problem persists. Any ideas? I thought perhaps the starter motor itself, or the load sharing relay (but these are just the first 2 that come to mind). It's been quite a while since I did fault diagnosis on a BM (back in the 70s when the electronics weren't as sophisticated as they are on a late 1980s bike.

Can you remove your relay and clean the contacts?
As K-bike said on your other post, the relay is the only path between the battery and the starter. If the contacts are open, the starter cannot turn. When the starter is spinning, lights, horns and flashers are disabled (the load shed relay is deactivated).

I have removed the relay and cleaned up the contacts. they seemed pretty good to me, but now they are gooder (attampt at joke here), no pits or anything like that.

I put a volt meter across the battery. It drops from 12.5v to 11.4v under load. I put the volt meter on the relay contacts. 0 voltage. Under load (starter motor running) it gets up to under a volt (0.6 or thereabouts) with the starter running. I would have thought that if the starter relay was the problem I would see 11.5 to 12.5 volts going through it????

Won't Go...Pull your starter motor and replace the brushes...wierd things happen when the brushes are worn...

good luck ram ...sounds like some weird stuff going on ......i would be rechecking all the positive power feed cables and making sure that there is no insulation breakdown withing the "electrics box" ie copper touching copper somewhere ...
your original problem of bad cable and fix up may be a clue to damaged cables sometime in the past that has come back to haunt you .

whilst you have the tank off ..have a good look around for accessory cables that may have been added or spliced in at some stage .

This is very strange. Have you tried to pull the fuse one by one from 1 - 7 to see if the starter motor will stop?

You may want to check the wiring connection and trace the connection / relay / kill switch. There may be a "modified connection / wiring".

thanks guys. A systematic track down of gremlins will now begin. I still think it may be haunted though. Perhaps the ghost of K75s realises that it just missed out on the ABS option by a year or two.
