Hi all,

One election over (council), one more to come (ACT) as well as HSC in the next few weeks. Such is the life of the Government Gig Worker. Not to mention being near the end of one grandparent/school holiday support and anticipating a few days next week with the other lot. Phew!
Then the biggie - taking the half French grandchildren to France for some time with their other grandparents for January.

Anyway, I thought I'd better start some planning for the Southern Ride next year while I have a few spare minutes.

Date: early March 2025. Exact Date TBA

Venue: Jindabyne caravan park Friday and Saturday nights. My initial thought is to book a few cabins, since there seems to be less of an appetite for camping than there was for the first Southern Ride. On spec, I'll probably look at 10 people's worth, with thought given to not being too crowded.

Ride Route: The Snowy Mountains loop past Thredbo and Tom Groggin to a lunch stop at Khancoban pub, back to Jindabyne via Cabramurra. Same route as the first Southern Ride.

Several discussions with regular participants raised the idea of basically repeating the first Southern Ride but with less camping. Others have agreed when they heard the idea.      Deja vu it is.  Smile

Agreements, disagreements, abuse etc., add a reply. Any indications of likely attendance welcome, though as always I understand that there are always circumstances that interrupt the best laid plans of mice.
(Kudos to anyone who pick up the reference in the tail end of the last sentence.)

Bill

Count me in. The cabins at the caravan park are nice. Most importantly, they have reverse cycle air conditioning.

At this stage, I'll throw my name in the ring as well.  So, so far we have:

Bill, Dai, TacKler, Peggysus.

Waiting on Gaz and Uli to confirm and will the real Rick be riding fit in time?  Waz and the Bathurst Krew?  Maybe an errant sidecar or a visitor from SA?  Perhaps an American, or two?

In answer to your question Bill, it is probably best to keep the route simple otherwise it will be like herding cats.  I have a map, so I am safe from anybody with a GPS.  Walwa for lunch is probably a bridge to far, although it is a great ride, so I may arrive from that direction.

If we make it a cabin instead of camping trip, it saves me hauling all the camping gear halfway round Oz.

I'm definitely keen.
As I'll most likely have Tilly the Prairie dawg with me, we'll be doing the tent option.
That gives me a month or two to sort out the red outfit. (which fishnets go with which etc)

No kudos yet.
Hint: “literary” reference. English author and scriptwriter, died early this century.

That'll teach me to try and be smart affraid . I knew the half-quote was from John Steinbeck's 'Of Mice and Men', but I thought someone might have had trouble with a mouse chewing through something the mouse didn't ought to chew through.

The author was deliberately playing on Steinbeck's line, as will be seen when the full context is seen. Southern Ride 2025 Icon_smile

Time to start buying lottery tickets or saving for the airfare? Plenty of accommodation and spare bikes downunder.

GoFundMe, is always an option.

Hitch hiking, high jacking, asylum, a refugee, a smuggler?  Just make up a story like the rest of them do or is Thespianism not your thing?

Robert Burns - 'To A Mouse'

Damn. I always get hung up on John Steinbeck and remember Rabbie Burns when it's too late.

Okay - back to organising my airfare.

Or not.

Wouldn't want to miss it - must keep doing these things as long as possible.

I'll look forward to catching up with the Kronies again.

As a matter of fact I'll be in that area this coming weekend for the Kosciusko Rally along with Waz and some (or probably many) BMW types. Had to delve deep into the garage cupboard to find the camping gear for Saturday night at the Geehi Flats campground but I haven't really toughened up again as we're staying at the Boorowa pub Friday night. Should be a nice little 1500km or so round trip.

Cheers

Only when they've had a couple at the pub, in which case we're smart enough to solve the problems of the world.
If they'd listen to us, all would be peace and prosperity.

Checked out accommodation at Jindabyne. First weekend in March has a 3 day min booking, which is likely related to a Mexican holiday or event.
Consequently, booked for the nights of Friday 14, Saturday 15 March 2025.
I've booked 5 studios, which have capacity for 2 single beds each, as well as bathroom, TV, bar fridge & microwave. They are all together in a row.
$292 per unit for the two nights, or 10% off if one of the occupants is an NRMA, RACQ, RACV etc. member.
First 10 with a reasonable likelihood of attendance indicated on the forum, best dressed (or slept). The closer to the time, the lower the chance of getting somewhere to stay, cabin-wise once we get beyond 10.

Hope that is satisfactory.

Bill

Hmmm, I've got to return 'home' in March to sort out safekeeping or reimportation to the US of my R75/100. Perhaps there'll be a chance of attending. It's been since October of 2018 that I was able to meet up with any forum members on a ride, other than a SE Queensland pub meal in late '22.

No more attempts at Kudos? No-one with knowledge of significant English literature of the 70s or so? So significant they made a radio and a TV series and a movie out of it?

Oh, I'm not fussy. The current bottle happens to be Irish (distilled in Dublin) but Scots, English, Japanese, Indian, American (!!! not bourbon) and Welsh have all passed through these hallowed doors. There's a bottle of Korean whiskey I have my eye on too.

You lot would get on well with my son. He picked up some top line Japanese whisky a few years ago when he was there. Good price then. Outrageous now, so it’s only a memory for him.
My discernment of taste isn’t that sophisticated.

Following a few helpful chats in the background…I’m definitely coming.

Still working on options, dates, flights, arrival/departure point, bike and pretty much everything else…but likely to be coming for a couple of weeks. Looking forward to catching up with you all again.

I have dismissed the idea of riding my own bike all the way from UK - too many war zones in the way and it is quite a long ride, so probably don’t have enough time of work for that. Maybe once I retire - what an adventure that would be!

Flight now booked (hopefully the arm & leg it cost will grow back by March)

Arrive Brisbane Sunday 09 Mar 25
Depart Brisbane Saturday 22 Mar 25

Tackler kindly trusting me with one of his K75 steeds (I’ll pack a spare cylinder in my suitcase) and we are working up suitable itinerary to get south for the 14/15 Mar weekend, rendezvousing en route with those that can.

Bring it on!

Thanks to Dave & Bill for all the assistance and encouragement so far.
Looking forward to seeing and riding with you all again. Hoping for a great turn out.

Excellent news.

Tentatively, we will depart Brisbane Wednesday and plan for the Bendemeer Hotel.  Then depending largely on what the Hunter Krew (and RT) decide, I expect the Aussie Hotel in Young, before the run into Jindabyne.

Just throwing it out there as the tourist will probably want to travel the scenic route.

Just wondering Paul, how are you bringing Dai ? Will he be in your cabin carry on luggage or in the hold? No doubt Tackler may have some advice on the matter.
Language differences need some attention and customs explained. Last time you were here I had to explain very carefully to you about Australia. We were standing on the side of the road as my bike had more fuel issues and the water truck went by at roadworks. You remarked that Australia was strange as we water the roads and expect them to grow. We do and the sun dries them and turns them black. bounce

Yes; but did he tell you that in Australia everything is out to kill or barbeque you - including the birds*.

No need to panic. Apart from a few rogues, the majority of everythings know their Aussie countrymen and mostly leave them alone. They concentrate their attention on foreign visitors, and in the top end, especially Germans.
Fortunately, the everythings usually extend the courtesy due to their fellow Aussies to a lone foreigner (such as Paul) while ever he is in company with Aussies.
Stick with us, Paul. Don't go wandering off alone.

Bill

When your time is up, it is up. Many years ago a rider on an R ( yes lower in the alphabet and life) was riding out to Tottenham (as in the great state of New south Wales). Doing a steady 80kms per hour (probably top speed) an emu (as in a large non flying bird) ran at 90 degrees to the bike. Result, one dead rider, one damaged bike and one emu still running.

The most dangerous animal in the UK, and probably worldwide, is the one that travels inside multi-coloured tin boxes - a sub-breed of human known as homoautomobilis. They seem to group together, often large herds, on roads and motorways and often behave erratically and are predictably unpredictable. They strike hard and fast, often with deadly results crying out “I didn’t see you, you were going too fast”. Generally, the larger and safer the protective box, the smaller is their spatial awareness and the slower is their reaction time. Their brains are not full developed (only achieved through riding motorcycles) and their capability is usually inversely proportional to their comfort and sense of security. Tin box makers could help improve life as we know it - make the outer shell out of soft foam rubber, remove seatbelts, make seats of hard uncomfortable plastic, remove air bags and replace with a sharp spike on the steering wheel, remove heating/cooling/climate control, remove all forms of entertainment and under no circumstances allow their spawn to travel with them.

I’ll take my chances with nature - don’t touch it, don’t get too close…if it can bite you, it will, if it can sting you, it will…everything is looking for its next meal.
