How come to remove the front wheel of my 1986 K100 RS I have to remove the brake calipers and to remove the brake calipers I also have to loosen the brake discs?!? In other words, is it not possible to simply remove the front wheel without dismantling all this stuff? The wheel is prevented from being removed by the brake calipers but in turn the brake calipers cannot be removed because - once freed - they hit the rim so the brake discs must also be loosened!!! My God, this is ABSURD!  Surprised
Where am I going wrong?

You should be able to get the calipers off without loosening the brake discs.

Make sure the pads are loose in the calipers. Wriggle the calipers to push the pistons in before trying to remove the calipers. As Duck says, the calipers will come off without removing the discs.

You won't have permission to post pictures directly into the forum yet (not enough posts), but you could try posting a picture of your problem to somewhere like ImgBB and giving us a link to it.

I'm moving this from Troubleshooting - How To Tell Others How To Do a Specific Job... to Troubleshooting - Frame, Fairing, Wheels...because you're asking, not telling, and clearly unsure of a basic task. Good to ask before diving in and going over your head. I've also edited the heading down from ALL CAPS to a more normal size because, well,  even when we've had our frust-ration, there's no need to shout.  Smile

Remove the calliper mounting bolts, slide the callipers backwards off the discs a small amount, then twist the calliper bodies slightly to press the hydraulic pistons back in a smidgen. The callipers will then slide off between the discs and the wheel rim because you've now created enough room. Nearly all bikes are like this.

Alternative method is to 1/ Remove the plastic caliper pad covers. 2/ Remove the pad retaining pins. 3/ Slide the pads out and mark the location and orientation of the pads. 4/ Unbolt and remove the calipers.

Are the original calipers fitted on your K100? You don't need to remove discs to remove the front wheel. Even on K100RS1 with a 17 inch wheel and 305mm discs it's OK, so on a standard K100 with small disc and a big rim it's not an issue.

Photos would help...
