While perusing eBay one fine day I discovered this kewl little device. Since the advent of must-have electronic distractions like your phone or GPS, Bluetooth headsets, & etc., that you must take along on your individual road to freedom, I've found that keeping them sufficiently charged up has been a bit of a bother. Often I try a few quick minutes of charge when stopped for lunch or at the servo getting "gas" or at ride's end. Sure, there are 12V BMW accessory port connectors, often with too-heavy cables that you can't trust to stay put as you roll down the road.

With a metal, hinged bar mount that uses a 3mm allen head screw and a soft rubber damper band for 22mm 'bars, or without the band for larger, 25.4mm 'bars, are dual USB-A & C connections with "water resistant" covers that click into a slot when not in use, and a fused, 59"/150cm SAE-type lead direct to battery.

It fits really well and sorta looks like it was made for the bike. I loosened the two T25 Torx screws that support the mirror and front master cylinder and slid it over just a few mm's to create some space between the combi switch assembly and the mirror stem around the 22mm handlebar, in this case on my K1200R.

I bought two so I can fit one to either Big Block or my K1300GT. HERE on eBay is a link to where I found them. I'm sure they can be had for less, maybe on AliExpress or other site, but I paid US$17.50 plus 10% tax for each of them. It even comes with a 3mm allen tool. I used a coupla zip-ties (black, not red Wink ) to tuck the excess wire away.

I'm not affiliated in any way with the manufacturer or the seller.

Hi TWB ,
How much current is drawn under noload by the device on noload?
I've just fitted a single USB outlet to the bars on my Basic2 and fed it via fuse4, which is fed by the load shedding relay. Bought the USB device from Jaycar.

Hi Basic2

You said it yourself: 'under no load', so no current is being drawn. There's no tiny LED to suck up a few microamps.

For standards-compliant chargers:-

- The maximum specified power for USB-C power delivery (the top socket) is 5 amps at 20 volts. At 5 volts the USB-C protocol limits the current to 3 amps (yep, there's a regulator in the plug. Or socket).
- The maximum power specified for USB 3.2 (the lower socket) is 900ma at 5 volts.

According to the description that TWB links to, the charger is not standards-compliant:

Input voltage: DC12V-24V
Output current: USB: 5V-3.4A; 9V-2A; 12V-1.5A; TYPE-C: 5V-3A; 9V-3A; 12V-2.5A
Output power: USB: 18W; TYPE-C: 30W

In fact those current vs voltage figures show a linear adherence to Ohms Law. Effectively, you need to know how much wattage the device requires before plugging it in as wattage is the limiting factor.

And all that was probably much more than you wanted to know! Very Happy

[Edit] I missed a very important something. Your link to JayCar failed, so I wasn't able to check this - you need to know what the above specs are (voltage, current and maximum wattage) for the socket you've put on your bike.

Ich spreche kein elektriker. Therefore, I cannot answer the above question technically. But, I can whack an android phone onto the unit and inform that it charged at 'about' the same rate as the wall charger I use at my desk - quickly, but not any faster. As for draw, last night, well before beddy byes, the bike's AGM battery had 12.78 volts as measured by my Centech multimetre. This morning, 15 hours later, it read 12.77 volts at the terminals. I'd say the unit is likely not drawing the battery down to be concerned about. Perhaps a pedant elektriker can argue against that. In the garage my bikes are all on steady rotation of either a BMW automatic charger or a Noco charger. The K1200R was not on a charger last night.

Some specs and sales pitch:

Input voltage: DC12V-24V
Output current: USB: 5V-3.4A; 9V-2A; 12V-1.5A; TYPE-C: 5V-3A; 9V-3A; 12V-2.5A
Output power: USB: 18W; TYPE-C: 30W

Wide compatibility - The input voltage of the motorcycle USB charger is (12V-24V). It can automatically adjust the voltage output according to your device (USB-A: 5V/3.4A, 9V/2.5A, 12V/1.5A TYPE-C: 5V/3A 9V/3A 12V/2.5A), fully compatible with iPad, iPhone , iPod, HTC, Galaxy, BlackBerry, digital cameras, PDAs, MP3 players, mobile phones and GPS

In the past I've used a fused, SAE corded BMW accessory socket direct to battery with a dual, LED-backlit voltmetre/USB-A socket and the requisite cord to my phone (USB-C) or Bluetooth headset (USB-Micro). It's convenient, sitting right up near the handlebars behind the windscreen - on most of my bikes I've fitted this set up. Now I can access it closer and within distance of the mini Marsee twist-off tankbags I use that hover above the fuel filler cap. An easy reach.

I elektrified my Harro Elefantenboy tankbag twenty years ago using an SAE pass thru that resisted water ingress. Of course, back in them thar daze there wasn't as much "need" for 12V accessory charging. I still have a kit to modify a tankbag if the need arises. The mod I was after was to be able to keep juice in anything handlebar mounted on an Ram X-mount or other without an extended cord to potentially tangle up in the works.

Here, I've got a standard, covered BMW accessory port, with a dual USB-A/LED voltmetre plugged in to it, with a USB-C cord up to the tankbag or handlebar mount. I'll keep it because it's good for trickle charging the bike's battery. It's fused with an ATC mini straight to battery. Oh, the choices!

You can trickle charge with USB-C?  Shocked    Didn't know that.

I use Battery Tender Juniors with a Powerlet plug to the dash socket.

No, a standard BMW accessory socket that takes the charger end, or is used with any male Powerlet or Hella plug or LED/USB plug (as pictured) with USB-A, C or Z you like.

Looks great, and functional. Tell us please how it handles water after some time. I have an K100 LT, with built in lighter, in the "glove compartment" which i use, but on My GS, I bought with something similar, which after standing outside for a month went haywire.

Jaycar is an Australian dealer. I got it from eBay. I do my best not to support Bezos' botox fiancée or $70 million yacht habit.

I won't be pointing a car wash nozzle toward it, and it'll never live outdoors, but will experience plenty of wet roadtrips and local splashing in the Pacific North Wet.

I've added the link to Jaycar correctly now.
