I'm the original owner of a 1987 K75S that has spent the last 30 years in storage. I'm finally in the process of restoring this classic and I'm sure this forum will be of great help. I'm looking forward to sharing the challenges and (hopefully) successes.

Wish me luck!

Wow that's going to be a storey. 30 years in storage means it's only done 7 odd years of riding. So the mileage should be low. What have you been up to for 30 years, being the original owner, and not using it?

Welcome, you'll find lots of help here!  Hello from the Tropics of Texas! 177912

Only 13400 miles (21565 km). I rode it quite regularly in my early "adulthood", then I got married and bought a house. Shortly after I rode the bike to it's new home the fuel pump quit. While I had the tank off I noticed quite a bit of frame rust so I pulled the rest of the body parts off to address that. The original "Lava Red" paint was pretty faded so I figured while I had the bike disassembled maybe a respray was in order...the row of dominoes was getting longer.
That was about the time my wife came home from her doctor's appointment with "the news", so the bike project got shelved while we got the nursery ready. The baby was born and all you parents out there know the rest...bye bye BMW project for now. Fortunately I took steps to preserve the engine and it had a nice, safe garage to live in so the deterioration wasn't too bad. Of course all the rubber is hard as a rock and some of the wiring has suffered, but nothing more than expected. I'm an empty-nester now so there's no excuse for not getting this beauty back where it belongs.
I'll certainly make use of this forum for it's wealth of experience and information and of course will share my progress that will hopefully help someone else in the future.

Wish me luck, I'm sure I'll need it!

Well, I think in this case you need perseverance more than luck.  Glad to see that you kept the mistress all these years and were not tempted to part company.

Since you are stripping it down so far, you may as well replace the engine rear oil seal and rebuild from there. A good source of spares for you would be Euromotoelectrics.com in CO.  Lots of shiny stuff and new rubber bits can be found there.

Enjoy.

Oh Euromoto already has a fair amount of my money, and will probably get a lot more.

I've read about quite a number of areas likely in need of attention as I progress. The rear main seal as you mentioned and also an o-ring for the output shaft by the clutch. I'll definitely need to lube all the driveline splines as well but that will all wait until I can get the engine running again. That's proven to be a challenge thus far.

I was hoping to avoid removing the frame from the engine, but that will likely become inevitable.

Good luck there Dave, I'm pretty sure you won't need luck tho. I think you're going to be surprised how simple and easy a brick is to work on.

Thanks. I've already created a folder and I'm filling it with links to threads from this forum that I know will come in handy, I can't imagine doing this otherwise. A manual can't beat learning from the streets like you folks have.

:tu1:Great and thanks for the storey. Does it not happen to so many of us but mostly with another machine and not the original one. Always good to have a project.

Have the injectors serviced before trying to start up.

That's one of the first things I did, I wasn't going to kid myself into thinking they would still work properly.
Getting them out took some work to say the least, which will probably be the theme of this project. There's a place in the state of Idaho that specializes in these injectors, they should have mine by Monday.
