I have just got myself my first K100 LT it is in need of some TLC with it being a new bike to me i am going to first of all give it a full service, get the switch's that arent working working (Heated Grips. Four Way Flasher. ABS -Reset. Rear Fog Lamp) and ride it for around a month, then I shall go for the full operation of stripping her down and getting the frame resprayed if needed, the colour scheme will be revised... I am thinking of red so it stands out.
I am also considering applying the ABS delay mod thats if the ABS is working! Will find out very soon. From there i will be able to work out what other jobs need to be done...

If anyone has a hint on where to start looking at the switch problem will same me having a hunt around to see if it's one cable/connector or more...

First job is find an area big enough for the task... Found it same place as where i fix my car sounds good, in the "garage"

I had my 1988 LT resprayed last year . I wanted metallic black but was told No , its gonna be metallic blue ! She was once again correct. Blue does suit the bike so here is the link to look at a blue one.

Yeah i will do.... may be best for me to make it a second renovation post... Having taken the back off of it leaving a very strong sub frame, I plan on being able to use it as it originally was or as a bike trailer. so will be able to swap backs as and when... Full plans will be posted incase someone has a similar idea..

I have now got the bike back to my garage, with the intention of sorting out some electrical issues that are apparant.... lots of wires have been soldered and extended.... It looks like that a butcher decided to lengthen some cables one that springs to mind is the Fuel lever sensor cables.... the connector has been removed and replaced with 2" sections of random green cable, need to make an effective repair as removing the tank would be a pain in the arse...

The other strange connection is the Rear fog lamp and hazard flasher switch's have been forced together.... going to sort it all out so they are wired properly over the next week... lets see if i can't be using the bike for work on friday.....

Just need to get a ABS relay i think now as well....

Twincarb, Consider yourself lucky. We purchased our second tractor ( only 50 years old) from our ex next door neighbour. This bloke was 83 years old and had one arm. He had rewired the tractor...using one roll of wire....all red. Try to follow the red wire to find why something does not work!

I have just ordered new cable and connectors to replace the ones that have been butchered.... The company i used is http://www.polevolt.co.uk/ there prices seem pretty good esp as the cables are sold by the meter and i have been able to colour match all the ones that need sorting out...
Fingers crossed i should be able to have the old girl on the road again by friday so i can give her a 140mile blast to and from work!

Spline lube time.... well i am stripping the bike all the way down so thought while i have got the back end stripped down, cant do any harm taking off the driveshaft and swingarm as i can have a look of the state of play.... OOPSS

My prognosis is it isnt looking too good, when they are mated together there is an amount of play in all planes, which i guess shouldnt be there, I know i can get the driveshaft fixed not a problem, but I am not to sure the best way to go with the final drive splines...... anyone!!!

Hi twincarb,

Nice project for you.

On paint colour...

Red bikes might go faster, but red as a colour (depending on shade of) may be more visible than the colour of you're bike now during daylight but in low light or darkness it is nearly invisible, Fire engines are red to go fast but they are also plasterred with reflective tape.

This is not a critisism, paint it what ever colour you preffer and enjoy!!!

Regards Bushy

Right time for a quick update with some photo's as well, ideal time as the bike is stripped down and i have had the fairing and plastic's all resprayed and the frame and lots of other metal bits have all been to the powder coaters....
1988 K100 LT Rebuild... Imag0412

I now cant decide if my dining room is a dining/computer room or really it is handy place to store my bike bits so they don't get dirty!

1988 K100 LT Rebuild... Imag0510

Post powder coating of the frame, and petrol tank put onto place to keep in safe and not likely to be knocked.... I know i need to sort out the basement, come tuesday morning i will be shifting a load of building rubbish to the tip.... need to get past all the bags of plaster in the garage first mind.

Oh on that note despite having the great space at work i realised i wouldnt be able to tinker with little jobs in the evening if i did the rebuild there. So its back in my garage, basement and dining room!

1988 K100 LT Rebuild... Imag0413

Having taken the forks apart so they can be powder coated under the rubber boot i found this amount of rust and crap on both legs, never mind its all been cleaned off and i had got new fork seals for the job anyhow....

1988 K100 LT Rebuild... Imag0511

The fork legs back from the powder coaters, looking all shiny, i need to clean up a couple of area's of powder overcoat, its a great finish, I was however expecting the depth of it to be a very thin coat but it looks like it is in the region of 0.5mm thick!

1988 K100 LT Rebuild... Imag0512

Poor quality pic.... but this is how the bike is looking in the garage..... however i have removed the exhaust tubes as i am cleaning them up at the moment, I have also cleaned the throttle bodies, pics coming in my next post! I also found that the crankcase hose was split, which would suggest i may get a spot more power when i replace it and get it back together...

I need to get the crankcase's off and get them repowder coated so they are looking like new, i am not going to have the time to arrange that before i head off to the falklands for four months mind.

hehe.... I have been using T-cut metal polish so far, but I think that i have to ramp it up to using some wet and dry paper... didn't think about using it with a light oil like wd40.... will try that now before lunch see if i can shift the stubbon crud on them...

Ultrasonic cleaners are just perfect for cleaning things like the throttle bodies.

I am thinking about using the ultrasonic cleaner on the injectors but am not to sure if i need to get them switching on and off to give it the clean they deserve!

there is merit in that twincarb ...some of the clever folks made a circuit to pulse the injectors whilst cleaning them ....with verry positive results.

i guess worst case is you could use a 9 volt battery to pulse them intermittently .....(fairly safe )

i think that one of our members documented the cleaning exhast pipes process with wet and dry some time ago now .....with sparkling results (cred to him ......... sorry, name escapes me at the moment.... after all im just a silly old fart )

but a great tip ...

but to get the gunge off the front of the headers ...i would be using a cheap stainless scrubber ....works great on pots ...grin ....and also exhaust pipes ...shhh ...i didnt say that out aloud so the mrs could hear ...

what she doesnt know wont hurt ....um... for long

It's been a while but i have been away with work for a while, so time to get started back on the bike, Jobs left to do are lots of cleaning, check the Cam Chain and start to put bits back together...

Cam chain now checked, and it looks perfect which is good news Very Happy just having a look for paint which is suitable for the engine covers.... I think i have found a product that will be suitable... http://www.mandp.co.uk/productinfo.aspx?catRef=588622 will give it a try and report back my findings.

I also have a large number of items in my Moto-bins basket... including for them to repair my driveshaft, and lots of little gaskets etc..... It will probably take them 2 weeks to turn it all around. So the aim is to have the engine all cleaned up and the covers painted which means i will be ready to put the frame onto the bike again! Very Happy

Sand paper (between 700 and 1,000 grits works very well. They are solid stainless steal and the fine sand paper wont dig into them but just remove the deposit,
Trust me I do that every 2 years Very Happy

The photo's explain themselves, with a break in the weather over here i decided it was about time that i gave a couple of the engine bits a spray of paint, I decided not to go with a gloss finish but rather a satin finish.

These are initial results... the paint hasn't fully dried off yet so will wait and see what the final result will be...

1988 K100 LT Rebuild... Img_2110

I have tapped up the lines and BMW which i need to remove, and as long as the paint finish is good I shall try and match the colour to the rest of the bike fairings!!!!

I personally really like the satin finish.
Good job!

About your question on sanding the exhaust pipes, I don't change sanding direction.
The grit is so fine that when you finish, you don't see any marks. It's polished.

yeah the satin finish allows the "pitting" of the metal to come through as well, from seeing some of the gloss finishes it tends to make it more glass like... which going back to an earlier discussion could/would reduce the actual surface area as well.

I am thinking tomorrow is going to be another prep day on all the other parts to be painted. I have got 2 Allen bolts that hold the Oil sump in place being a PITA but will attempt to loosen them off so everything else can be painted in one go.

The down pipes are looking a whole lot better now, I found it was "natural" to follow the length of the pipes when using wet and dry on them. Will probably spend a spot more time on them when I get to build the bike back up....

Shouldn`t be difficult to find using google picture search, since most models did came with that colour set up during their production life (usually late).

Yeah the casings are looking far better now, I was going to be spraying up the next batch that i have ready to do, which will only leave me with the Footrest plate type thingy's, gearbox and shaft drive but the weather down here wasnt great....

I am caught in a catch 22 need to build a new garage so i can work on the bikes in the dry... need to finish the K to get it out of the garage!

With any luck the garage will be dry in the morning and I will be able to spray the next batch... watch this space for tomorrow evening!

weather forcast suggests that I should be ok in the morning.... I just need to finish off taping off the bits i don't want to get painted!

On the side panel i have already painted, I have started using wet and dry paper on the lines and BMW so may not be painting it but keep it polished alluminium

Just a couple of teaser photo's.... Mid spray session.... Ok I know i really shouldnt be spraying at the moment... the risk of getting dust on the paint work is very high using the compressor in the same room that i am spraying in... and i haven't put plastic all over the room!

Confession time....... when i was rubbing back i didnt mask off the area below so have removed a couple of patches of paint..... Shouldnt be any great drama's mind... just an annoyance that i need to give it another coat of paint! but i know the cleaning isnt going to be half as pain staking as it was the first time around!

Great work TwinCarb good to see you bit the bullet and pulled the old girl down for a respray. The results look really good !!. I like the gloss finish as well but many disagree with this, I believe if you are doing your own restore there is nothing wrong at all with a bit of your own individual flare.

Halo

Thanks for the motivation.....

Just about to have a bowl of porridge for the motivation to get the gearbox ready for soda blasting and then it will be the rest of the engines turn!

I am going to be doing it without the casing on, but with most of the internals in place, because i dont believe that using soda wont cause any problems...

The only thing i am cosidering doing is taking the head off which means it will fit into the blasting cabinet without having to make up a blasting booth...

I may even end up painting the head block as well!.... No i am not going to go that mad hehe Very Happy

I have had a little niggle that there was something not quite right with my O/P shaft... I have now figured it out having had a look at Berts restoration page... My bike is an 88 model which means it should have 12 rivets but I can only count 6!

I cant quite work out why it would have needed replacing with an older version at some point in it's life, but means i am going to have to have a look at the circlip to see if it has suffered from the problem of circle to oblong.... maybe thats the cause of my original rattle! hmmm

Check that head for flat because the #3 combustion chamber had had a bit of water into it by the look of the valve heads and the piston crown.

looks about right for any head with lots of miles

a little valve grind and replace the valve stem seals ...clean up the intake rubbers and reseal them ...probably rings as well

+ a clean out of the carbon ....dont forget to do the intake and outlet ports ...there is a long held theory that about 400 grade polishing of the ports is the best option and get rid of casting flaws for better flow

the new head gasket should solve the rest .
