Well I should have the new bike home next Thursday. I quick question in preparation. The lower RH fairing has a piece broken off it. What is it made of and is fibreglass OK to use for the repair? Don't fancy forking out over $200 at this early stage. Maybe once it is back on the road.

Dave, yes the fairing is a type of fibreglass, similar I think to early chopper-gun types. All the parts are made by a specialist company, can't remember the name but it's stamped on some of the parts with the build/mold date thingy.
I repaired my fairing where the crash bar had broken a piece out, came up a treat.
I'd stick some pics on here but I am damned if I can make the upload thing work ! I must be a luddite,............ I am a luddite.

Thanks for that Dennis. Here is a picture. Not very good but you can see the piece that is broken out. I will have the piece to put back so all should be well. In the general discussion there is a sticky note on how to post pictures.

Wouldn't even try to repair that. I destroyed the same panel on my K during a close shave with a Merc's wing along with the end of the brake pedal and footrest. It was that close!
Unless parts are much dearer on ebay in Australia, that's the way to go.
I only paid £30 and sprayed it with a colour matched aerosol. You might even find a panel the correct colour.

I've got a spare white panel off an 86 LT if thats any good for you. No way I'll get permission to spend money on that bike too. I'm in Robertson, but have a neighbour who commutes to Canberra weekly. I will dig it out and post a piccy.
Cheers RT

ComberJohn, this one stopped the current owners boat from rolling down the drive. Also smashed the rubber mounts off the crash bar (conspicuous by its absence). I will also have the crash bar but that will be another job.

RT, I will do some research and see if that one will fit. Mine is a 6/89 model first registered in 90 so should go very close. It would be great if they are the same and you are prepared to part with it.

As you can see there are a few things with the right side that need a bit of a repair done to them.

Mine's an '89 and I don't know what the panel came from.
No problem with fit so reckon they are all the same.
Grab that offer from RT before he changes his mind!

Thanks Comberjohn. You must be up late/early.

RT if you could post a pic for me and PM me with a price I am sure we can come to an arrangement. Is this bike one you will release spares from or are you going to try and convince she who must be obeyed to let you do it up. Its just that I may be looking for a couple of other bits later.

Any help is much appreciated.

Sorting it this morning, the old 86 LT has been mesmerising me since I have the RT working, but if I am honest I think she is past it. Had hopes of my wife riding it, but realise that they are too heavy for a shorty.
So, off to the shed and get my camera out.

Here goes

There is some damage to it but has been roughly fixed, I'm thinking it would be a pretty easy fix if you are repainting it anyway. I can't see the image yet so I'll send this and try again.

Have had the small hole in the fairing repaired. Not a great job but good enough until I get it resprayed.

Fairing Repair P8290013

Work starts in earnest this weekend. A mate is coming down to show me how to pull out and grease the rear end. The tank will be going back together and with a bit of luck and a stiff breeze she will be fired up for the first time since 2002. Just hope I do not find too much more and I should nearly be ready for Araluen.

thanks for the update dave ....starting to look good .....between you and me ...i wouldnt be putting the side covers on just yet ....there are rubber things that deteriorate around the throttle bodies , fuel lines ....electrical connections and sensors that will .....i say again ...will ...need attention in the not too distant future requiring the removal of them again ...i would be planning to put some miles on the old girl before attaching them ...by all means get them fixed up for paint preparation and matching ...

cheers

Gone to a better home Charlie, at least it might get fixed up now Dave's on the case.
I'm going to have a go at a cracked main fairing if my work ever slows down.
