Hi Guys

Yesterday I tried to start the bike with the side stand down; it has a cut out so all I did was run the battery down, when I put the side stand up flat battery. I Jump started bike from mates car and all seemed OK but I now have no lights, horn or indicators, engine running fine .I got the tank off and opened the box with all the relays in as I think I might have a problem with the “load shed relay” or the “starter relay”. I am not sure which relay is the “load shed relay” (starting there first as it’s cheaper than the starter relay) I think it might be the blue Hella 12V 4RA 003 510 which seems to be open circuit. Is it worth changing this or am I going down the wrong route.

Rich

rich ... keep in mind

the load shed relay relys on the brushes in the starter motor making good contact ....basically the earth for this relay is taken through the starter .

so start at the load shed relay ... and good luck

Hi All, no luck yet, unfortunately my relay box is different from the link. Mine has 4 small relays in the top right, 2 small and one slightly bigger one in the top left. I have checked all the relays and they all seem OK (12V off relay open 12V on relay shut). I have tried swooping relays about and that has made no difference. I think it’s time to stop have a think and come back tomorrow.

Thanks for all your help please let me know of any other idea’s.

As Charlie99 said, if the brushes on the starter are bad, the headlight won't work.
Here is a quick and dirty test:
Start your bike
When the bike is running, ground the connection of the starter (DO NOT PUSH THE STARTER BUTTON WHEN DOING THIS TEST!)
If the headlight is working, the problem is related to the starter's brushes.

Hi All

Thanks very much for all your help, I should have listened to Charlie99 first suggestion. I tested starter motor by connecting the output from starter relay to earth, turned ignition on and the lights etc all worked. I removed the starter motor and found it was intermittent open circuit between the main connector and outer case, I took the motor apart and found all sorts of muck, all cleaned, tested earth from starter relay output which was good, put back together and now working. I am going to try to find some new brushes to replace at some time in the future. But in the mean time thanks very much once again you have been a great help and certainly know your bricks.

Thanks

Rich

Rich,

We are not experts, but people with experience. We learn from each others, share it and this is how we are able to build this huge database of knowledge
As I asked DSCR on another post: Have you checked this page?

This forum has enough resource for any avid reader to be able to fix all the major issues on his bike.
You want to replace the brushes on the starter? Have you seen the tutorial about this?
Spend time to read every post, and you may know as much (or maybe more) than a BMW mechanics.
Some of us are more experienced and we don't always think about mistakes that a 'newby' may do. For this reason, when new owners are fixing something and make a mistake, if they let us know, we can warn the next new owner to pay particular attention to a specific area.

You see, you found some good helpers and at the same time you are contributing to help others too.

You can give yourself a big pat on your shoulder for troubleshooting your problem.

Cheers

CF
