I own a 86 K100RT, and last fall the centre stand collapsed, luckily I caught it before it fell over. Last week I put it on its side stand and it failed also. I've owned a number of bikes including BMW and have never heard of the centre and sidestands failing anytime. Anyone heard of this or am I just lucky?

YES it was a recall on the center stand. (By the way, recalls are only good for 10 years).
The newer design has a gusset.
I never heard about the side stand braking.
One of the very important point on the K100 center stand is that it has the tendency to rust from inside out. It is very important to keep the rubber caps at the end of the tubes otherwise the water will sit in the stand and it gets corroded.
I just pointed this to Phil after seeing a picture of his bike.
The best thing to do, is to spray the inside of the stand with WD40, and then poor some very heavy oil inside.
Then you put the rubber caps back on and it should be good for years.
It takes only few minutes to do this ..... Why not having this task as part of the regular spring maintenance.

Hi Bruce your version of luck and mine differ somewhat and they say things come in three's so what's next?

After Bert's astute observation I am going to fit a centrestand from an 1100 when I find one as they are easier to operate as an additional bonus.

Thanks for the replies guys, I spoke to the owner of a local wreckers and he suggested sealant in the pipes after you inspect for damage. I also am curious if there is an alternative centre stand from BMW I could use, from a different model year that would be compatible. Any suggestions?

You can use the stand from a K75 or a K1100. The K1100 is a bit different but fits on the K100

thanks again! thats a bit of a relief, bmwboneyard doesn't have any of mine in stock. getting tired of leaning it against a wall like a dirtbike, tends to make me skittish!
