I recently needed to remove the oil filter from an R12GS and didn't have the filter tool. These filters are (argueably) more difficult to reach than our K engine oil filters as they are external to the engine but fit in a very close engine casting. My solution - Get a product called Rapp-it pipe repair bandage and a new oil filter. The repair bandage is polyester resin and a kevlar-like fabric, the whole thing being contained in an air-tight package. It is activated for use with tepid water. Now, get the new oil filter in a position where the wrap can be wound around the end of the oil filter. Coat the oil filter with any silicone type grease (release agent). Activate the Wrappit product and pass around the filter about 4 times, don't make it too thick or it won't fit in around the filter on the bike. Make sure you push the wet wrap firmly into the filter indentations and continue to mould it till the product goes off in a few minutes. Fashion the remainder of the wrap into a handle that muti-grips can get onto. Tap the cured wrap off the filter and clean it all up, I trimmed mine with a hacksaw so it only engaged the filter indentations. It will be an exact push-on fit on all subsequent oil filtrs and it is so strong it is virtually unbreakable. I was amazed how well it worked, the product must have many more similar uses.

Very good idea Dennis.

This could be use for many other applications. Radiator leak, oil pump or ever a cracked crankcase Very Happy
If the finish is smooth, it could be used to make fiberglass molds. (Same as plaster bandages use by hospitals to make a cast)

Yes Bert, it appears to be identical the the plaster cast technology of today. Very strong, amazing really. It appears to behave similar to high-impact plastics when cured, not brittle at all. I suspect there are cheaper ways to buy it than the pipe wrap, which is not cheap. I happened to"find" one at work. It will never slip on the oil filter because it is a perfect fit, unlike the filter tools.
