Most of the online forums say to use 80/90 gear oil. However the Clymer manual suggests that 90W is fine for above 5C. Useful as I have 2lt of Silkoline BOA 90L.S in the garage and unlikely to be riding in under 5C until autumn.

Any reason why I should not use the 90W for the spring summer and change to a 80/90 mix or similar for Autumn? Its API GL5 which meets the specification.

i guess this is for the gearbox giles ?

the 90 weight will be fine in the bevel drive all year i expect ...they get warm under load ...but i guess everything would glue up around 5 degrees anyhow till it warms a little .

I was thinking of using it for both gear box and shaft driv. Manaul identifies same weight for both. Mmm....might leave it a a month or so till cold mornings are less of chance. I cover so many miles it will need changed before the autumn anyway.

The L.S. in the description says that this oil is meant for limited slip differentials, and therefore has friction additives.
And because of that it could be that it would be running a bit hotter than a oil w/o this additive.

LS gear oil is a compromise and is needed in limited slip diferentials but there are far better things to use in a K gearbox.
I would not be using straight 90 gear oil as I strongly suspect that the gearshifts would be interesting when cold to say the least.
There are quite a few who use a synthetic gear oil and say the shifting is better.
Oil is the cheapest thing you will ever put in a gearbox but the most important.

Good point, well made.
