Below is a diagram of wiring up a toggle switch to accessories. I have four toggle switches on my dash and two are used - Hazard and spotties. The other two were used for police gear and were just cut off. I want to use them to cable up my radio and intercom to an on/off switch. Problem is the swich has no pin lables and the wiring does not match anything standard. Using the below diagram and assuming pole 4 is closest to the fuel tank I have blue/white, pole 2 is yellow/grey and pole 3 is brown. Can someone let me know what the 3 poles are on a BMW toggle switch as they are not labled and when it gets to the plug it changes color again. On the female side of the plug I have a loop of green/black between poles 3 and 2 and the green black on pole 2 goes off to where it was cut. Green yellow runs from pole 4 and goes to the old police relay. Any help would be much apreciated. Hope this is not too confusing.

The genuine switches is a three position switch.

In centre position nothing is connected.
If you push down in one end, the center pole being connected to the pole in the opposite side.

eg. If you push the switch down at rear end, front and center pole would be connected.

Illuminated switches have one more pole for the ground connection (brown wire).

As CanberraDave says, this is a ON/OFF switch with a bulb (The 4 way flashers on my K75 has one and this is a genuine BMW one).

I don't have access to it right now, but yes the switch has to be wired with a + AND a -.

I must say I agree that I could have expressed myself a little more specific about the switches.
The switches is basically a three position switch, due to internal mods there is a lot of configurations.
on-off-on.
momentary on-off-on.
momentary on-off-momentary on.
off-on.

Nothing mentioned about a bulb (or just on/off) in CD`s text, but as long it`s a brown wire involved...I assume a bulb is present.
But since it`s a former police, you newer know about the wiring since the switches have other functions...than civilians.

Haven`t found anything matching the colour codes, or the wiring description.
Closest one involving a loop is a sirene wiring, which a momentary on-off-on switch grounds the negative side of the coil to the sirene relay.

Here is the wiring of the hazard switch. 2 & 3 are power and 4 is ground.
I would assume that the schematic of CanberraDave is ccorrect.

No doubt about it, since the wiring colours corresponds...it is a older type (w/bulb) hazard switch that`s used in conjunction with the police equipment.

I was to focused at the police model wiring diagrams and the wiring after the connector.
