Just acquired a 1985 K100 RS as a little project, looked inside the fuel tank lots of gung. What's the best way to drain it, as I disconnected the fuel line to the injectors rail and nothing comes out. The bike has sat for 12 years in a garage so need to change fuel, filters etc before I try and start it.

Any help advice appreciated.

Remove the tank from the bike and remove the one way return valve (return line). Let the tank drain overnight.
I hate to tell you that you made a mistake to try starting the bike. You certainly sucked the gunk into the fuel pump.

Drain the tank, remove everything from inside and we'll see if the pump can be salvaged.
Please don't power it again with the old gas.

Took the fuel line off the injector bar before I spun it over, but I suppose it will still have sucked the gung into the pump Duh!!

Take a sharp knife to your garden hose and syphon the crap into a bucket then discard it in an environmentally friendly manner. Or use it as weed killer:lol: Remove the tank and fuel pump, level sensor etc then wash it out with hot water and detergent, rinse thoroughly and place in the sun/wind to dry.

Dismantle the tank and turn it over?? You don't want to run the pump any way.

Emptied the tank, but the bottom of the filler cap is coated in a hard coating is this normal? One of the guys at work suggested that I wash the tank out with water then put some fresh petrol a swirl it around the tank to re-coat it, what do you think.

The integrity of the tank looks ok but all that stale fuel gunge has to be cleaned thoroughly before even attempting another start scenario - hopefully your pump will live to fight another day but you need to ditch the fuel filter and possibly replace the tank's inner rubber fuel lines with fuel line that is specifically rated for running whilst immersed in fuel - good luck with it all, many on this forum have been there before you and achieved a positive end result Wink

Looks like moisture corrosion on bottom of cap...may not be salvagable, start looking online for replacement. Here are a couple things that I experienced after buying bike with fuel and stabilizer left in tank. Almost all seals turned to gooey tar and chunks fell off. Cleaned up with denatured alcohol. Swirled serveral ounces in tank then wiped tank dry with lint free cloth. Got it clean and dry. The fuel pump assembly and components pretty straight forward for installing. You will be successful.

Make sure you remove the pump, clean the inlet filter and check the rubber surround. Quite often if you find this gunk its coming from that piece. Further that's a very unhealthy piece of hose, so, as above, renew all with one suitable for submersion in petrol. You might want to renew all your fuel hoses and try to get your injectors cleaned and your fuel pressure regulator in an ultrasonic bath, as that gunk will block/affect all. See if you can have the pump pumped through with some aceton or similar.

I have an ultrasonic cleaner for my airbrushes, what cleaning solution would you use?

As you live in England, I don't know if you have access to this product (Goo gone)
I don't know if it could be a cleaning solution for the tank, but I always had very good success to remove sticky residues like glue or rubber marks with this product.
This is cheap and maybe worth trying.

Run into a problem, the old rubber mount for the fuel pump has turned into goo and I just can't get it out does anyone have any good ideas to help me out. One of the lugs has also broken off, brittle with old age.
