Hi guys!

Does anyone know why BMW decided to loose the ignition coil cover on later models?

Looks nicer with cover but I bet there is a reason.

i wonder if it could be because of the extended side covers wilkur ...the early series were quite segregated (sidecovers) to just under the seat ...but i bet ..there were heat issues discovered and amended the design so that it minimalised the affect on the riders legs etc ?

Call me cynical, but I'm prepared to believe it was to save a few pfennig! BMW omitted a cheap circlip on the airhead transmissions for that very reason and the result was a disaster. So, why couldn't the same bean counters have prevailed on decisions related to the K-models?

BMW did start with this when the 4V models was introduced (K1) which have other coils.

And all 4V models have "open" coils, could be that these coils runs a bit more hot in use?

i found that the coils were collecting a lot of the heat from the sparkplug area, through the vents in the head , out the back, and collecting in the coils cover, so i've drilled ventilation holes in both sides of the cover, but kept the front intact for appearances sake.
