Hello, I tried to eliminate metal noise from exaust shield and silencer between 2500 - 3000 rpm. I removed shield, than put five O rings under - between shield and exaust. I used 6 mm termoresistant O rings on all bolts (5 bolts 6 mm). Much better, no more metal sound, softer feeling...

Regards

That's better than my solution.
I folded a piece of fiberglass and stuffed it between the shield and the muffler.

In the days when I used the heat shields, I made a set of large headed hexagon bolts to increase the clamping area......but eventually the brackets on the silencer broke off so i discarded the shields.
But 'O' rings are a good idea nino.
Paul.

In desperation I stuffed a rubber thong (flip/flop) on one trip. Then it started to smell like burning rubber all the way home. I ditched the shield. Any pillion rides at their own peril with me.

My shield is rattling terribly because of vibes at 2500 RPM. If I remove the shield, will I tend to melt the plastic on the panniers, especially on hot days in stop-n-go traffic? If so, I have to find a solution. It's bothersome.

RT, is it then possible to have the bike registered without the shield? I thought it may be a safety issue.
Mine has a broken mount and I would love to get rid of it. This would also save me having to clean it and repaint.
Maybe if I put it on for rego (blue slip) and then ditch it.

I've got a spare clear shield if you need to borrow it for the blue slip. Let me know.

Thanks Sean,
Hopefully I won't need it. I do have a working one (are they classed as working?), but it has been hand painted by brush and looks like poo.
If I have to put it on to pass it can be just as quickly removed.

rossco

I had no trouble in NSW, most road bikes don't have a heat shield these days that I can see. I just polished it up as much as I could, got rid of the noisy rattle , now I can hear every other rattle.

here the MOT tester never even looked i do believe that it is not a requirement you might fail if it is not held in place properly but not for something that is not there

it is only really meand to prevent you from scalding your leg if wearing lshorts but hey i do not think any sensible biker rides in shorts

i have seen many a nasty case of gravel rash affraid and bikers on a hayabusa with flipflops and shorts and tshirt deserve to come off. i did and never again will iyou catch me dressed like a beach boy on a bike

and it is not because i think they are stupid it is just because the chances ao coming off seam to increase and other vehicle drivers are generally the cause of accidents not the biker lol

When you say take it off and fix it later, you do mean leave it off and fashion it in to some kind of modern day woomera or nulla nulla. Smile
I can see some serious googling here by the non locals. Lets call them foreigenors.

Sorry...I'm guilty of not reading the full thread before replying. I thought you meant a wind shield... Embarassed
You certainly won't need the heat shield for rego in NSW/ I did mine without it...blue slip as well as several regos since. Still....I do have a spare heatshield if you like 'em. Razz

Rossco I think it more shapped like a coolamon, but hang it in the shed so other in the know bikers can see it and know a K biker lives here. Jeez forget the name of the mobil phone Dundee used to call for backup. maybe use it for that.

Good idea Keith. And I only know the stick on a string as a Bullroarer. I think my shield would look good with a bit of string hanging off it.
