Hi Folks,
I have been scouring the forums to find more info about replacing the rear main seal on my 1985 K100RT and I need a little more help. I have read all of the great tips about removing the seal etc., but I was hoping someone could tell me which seals I should be replacing with part numbers or a link to a microfiche. I have some oil dripping out of the hole under the clutch housing and from what I gather it is likely the rear main seal. I have been looking a microfiches and have not been able to locate the part I need. I would love to just go to my local BMW shop, but after my last few interactions with the parts guys they don't really seem to know their stuff.

Sorry if I am being redundant, but I appreciate any advice you all can share.

Thanks,
Brandon

Good evening Doci!

The procedure and parts is similar as on the K75.
The description you find here.

One thing that would be different on your bike is the torque on the nut.
1. 140 Nm.
2. Back off.
3. 50 Nm.
4. Then another 50 degree turning angle.

The part # on the O-ring is superseeded by 11 21 1 460 467.
The part # for the seal is 11 11 7 666 186.

The mounting screws (x6) have a narrow head, and is rather soft
(one time use according to BMW) so it could be a good idea to order those to,
part # 21 21 1 454 417.

First of all have a smell of the oil and determine if it is comming from the engine or gearbox and compare the smell by dipping something into the gearbox. It most likely is the engine mainseal.
The seal and O ring are available as aftermarket parts. You may prefer to use OEM.
As For a spare parts man, GITH from this forum is taking up a job with a dealer in Seattle and he does know his stuff (it may be stuff but he knows it) I can't remember which one now but he will be along soon to tell you

Yes, but about the O-ring, read post #2 one more time.
I also have added part # for the seal and the screws.

Hello Docious - I was interested to find that you are working on virtually the same bike/leaks that I am getting into. I would love to stay connected with you as you progress, as I am doing the very same tear down and seal replacements. I look forward to learning from you, and sharing with you, all that will happen in the future seal replacements. Thanks.

Paul
