Hmm, interesting, Rossco, a direct link between Castle Hill and Vinegar Hill.

Paul.

The reason its called Vinegar Hill is the English pronunciation of its name in Irish: Cnoc (ka-nook) Fiodh (fwee) na gCaor(gur) Hill of the wood with the Berries.

It was the stronghold of the 1798 rebellion forces who held out for six weeks against the Crown's forces.

After the Norman conquest in 1100 (ish) (not K1100 Very Happy) many Gaelic names became Anglicised, kind of spelt how they sounded, e.g. Beal-fierste (mouth of the river) became Belfast, Tir Eoghain became Tyrone and Doire became Derry. Derry only became Londonderry after the Plantation of Ulster and the London Company contributed to the building of the Walls and the name changed by Royal Decree (and only a Royal Decree can change it back), well after the Normans. Vikings also had an influence, e.g. the area for Dublin was Baile Atha Cliath, Vikings changed it to Dubh Linn and then anglicised to Dublin. Other viking settlements were anglicised like Strang Fjord became Strangford and Weis Fjord became Wexford.
