The clock on my solo has been playing up recently, so today I replaced it with my good spare.

This left me with 3 old dead clocks with a variety of faults. By mixing and matching I managed to get 1 almost working, with a just a few segments missing, but by applying pressure to the display, I noticed that all the segments worked properly.

This led me to think about adding some shims between the display and the plastic housing to increase the pressure on the flexible contacts to the LCD.

The white strips, about 3mm wide and 10 thou (0.25mm) thick, were cut from a business card and slipped between the display and frame with the printed circuit board removed.

Well, it's worth a try if you have lost a segment or two, rather than binning your old clock.

And of course, don't forget to DeoxIT all the contacts (well nobody's mentioned it this week yet!)

Paul.

Great bit of thinking Paul.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there isn't really anything to wear out is there? So they should all be repairable?

Well done.

Yep you're wrong the liquid crystal stuff can leak out and then its shagged.
I have had success cleaning the contacts with a pencil eraser. A friend had a crook one a while ago and I got all but one segment to work so I will try pauls trick next time.
New ones are available on Ebay US for about $90

You're right blakey, there isn't anything to wear, but sometimes plastic things tend to stretch over time so that would release the pressure on the contacts.

As Rick says, if the crystals start flowing across the display, it's well past it's sell by date and DEAD.

Paul.

I decided to resurrect this thread....some few weeks back I acquired a seat and instruments for the RT from Eire 1400.

He did tell me the time clock wasn't working and at the moment I already have instruments but non working speedo on the RT [its not the wheel sensor], and fully working one on the LT which I can swap the working time clock out from rather than buying another time clock.

The RT instruments are the early ones with the 4 and 7 litre warning light, the LT is 92 with the 5 litre warning light.....

My plan is to take the instruments off the LT and extract the time clock to repair the new instruments before putting it into the RT so that the RT is not off road. Then take the working time clock from the 'old' RT instruments and pop it into the LT which is then again fully functional.

My question....is this an option or are there differences in the time clock over the years? I am not really into electrical bits like this but have someone who will do it if I give him the correct bits.

Yeah - it'll work. In both cases pin 1 is permanently live and pin 13/18 provide the earth. You could also try PMing me as I have at least three known working ones lurking in the spares draw. I prefer a nice fat round analogue clock with a decent backlight mounted in the fairing, rather than something which I can't see at night even with a good squint at it.

Errr - yes, about 15,768 minutes of difference over 30 years, give or take a few leap years. Good news is though, you'll never be more than 1440 minutes out at any one time.

Now how do I PM fishes...?

Don't think you can - fishes are not forum members so you can't PM them unless they join.Very Happy
