How do you confirm that the idle speed that the tacho is telling us is correct... I know there is an adjustment that can be made inside if it isn't right. But what method is used to confirm in the first place it is correct....
I guess this may really be electrical mind hehe Wink

I would recommend pulling the number 1 sparkplug wire, putting a screwdriver into it and hold onto the screwdriver shaft. While the engine is running, count the number of electrical pulses for 60 seconds, and then divide by 2 (remember: wasted spark system). That should give you an accurate RPM to work from...Smile

Now for a serious reply TC I dont have any way of checking but once upon a time in another life I has a ignition timing light that would read the rpm according to the plug pulses that clubie wants you to hang onto. There probably are the same items available today but I dont use them anymore as I dont have a need, mine broke and it went into dumpster.

some "auto" digital meters have a count cycle on them ....for tacho functions ...a good way to do it would be to tap into the injector pulses and divide by something . maybe 2 ?

the replies have had me laughing away this morning! Logically using the HT lead I have calculated I need to stand in a pool of water without shoes on in order to get an accurate reading affraid

I am thinking the safer option would be to measure from the low side of the Coils as that would be getting the signal to fire the HT side.

I think i have identified a tool that will do the job, designed for classic cars.... and with it being a wasted spark system the maths should speak for themselves... the tacho will read in the region of 1000-2000 but the readout would either be half or double what it should be so should be obvious....

The only reason I am looking to do it is because I had to do a repair to the tacho in which one of the legs had broken off I replaced it with a piece of wire which i suspect would have lower resistance but not sure how much difference and if it would be sufficient to cause a noticeable difference...

A wasted spark system fires on every up stroke just like a 2stroke would so its gonna read equal to rpm. I reccon the count method is for speed freaks as i cant hardly keep up with the cpr count - remember 1 thousand and 1 etc

A easier way to count when using the first metod.

1. Put the laptop at the seat.
2. Turn on the camera, in the direction to your face.
3. Start the bike, and grab the HT wire.
4. Run the bike untill you feel your nose starts to vibrate.
5. Watch the clip afterwards, count the number of times your eyes turn wide open during one minute.

Ok I got a multimeter which is capable of measuring the rpm by taking an inductive measurement from the HT leads. It is reading 1988 so not sure if it's reading the year the bike was made or if I need to half the reading! Wink Which would put it very close to 1000 rpm. So I am happy for today.... going to try and balance the throttle bodies tomorrow and in a couple of days will get around to checking the idle mixture with a CO tester...

From what I understand it's identical to setting up 4 carbs on any other bike..... Get the bike nice and warm. Connect the test equipment up to the bike, make adjustments to make sure that all 4 are even..........

Seem to recall some sort of warning that they are a nightmare mind................................

I guess it is a mix of the bikes own heat on top of it and age. I am hoping that things will work out smooth for me... Just been out and grabbed a couple of T pieces so I can keep the vacuum connector jobby connected....

I guess I will know if I am on a loosing streak if I really struggle to get my gauges to settle down.... This time tomorrow I should know if I am in business lol

Of course I would go for the mechanical approach, stuff this on the crankshaft by the ignition sensor.

Idle speed.... Sam_0325

Can I ask why you need to know an accurate RPM reading?

Paul.

PS my outfit idles smoothly at around 600 RPM. (on the tacho, that is)

Hi Paul,

The only reason I was more curious than anything else is because of the repair I did to the tacho which involved replacing one of the legs which connects to the dial and carry on onto the circuit board. This meant that I had no idea what the reading had changed by.... It's also one of the tune up jobbies before adjusting the throttle bodies the idle should be set. As I wasn't sure if I was between 900 and 1000rpm. I now know that I am set to 1000rpm or just under.

I now know that I am approx 200rpm over on the tacho at idle... At some point I may adjust it to show a truer reading!

meter This is the meter I got which isn't to expensive and will be of use on the spitfire when I get the engine running...

You can borrow my meter and see what it reports your outfit as hehe Wink I have to agree that a mechanical device connected to the crankshaft is the ideal way of measuring it and to use a piece of electronics would need a couple of hundred £ spending to ensure the accuracy of it.

I believe Club_C should demonstrate his idea into the 'how to section'.

It would be impressive to see a video of Club_C tied to the ignition coils of the bike and going uphill on the ski slopes of BC.
