There has been lots of discussions of handlebars with and without heating. My question is simple: What is the actual purpose of the handlebar weights??? Mine has them, but I wonder why?

It changes the resonance of the bar and is supposed to cut down/out the vibration from the engine. I make no futher comment.

Minimal at best, especially if there is an imbalance in running, ie, vibes, to start with. It is a bandaid. I use Throttlemeister's heavy duty bar end weights as a passive cruise control and because they look good, and as everyone surely knows by now,

"It is more important to look good than to feel good, darlinks."

Hi there, I took out mine, because the grips I liked had no room for them.
I Don't miss them.
Best regards

The only bike I've had that I have noticed any difference with or without is my srx600. A whippet of a bike the size of a 50cc moped, cafe racer style,clip-ons, rearsets etc. then end-weights weighing about 1/2 lb each.
It did temper the vibes a bit from the 600cc thumper engine, didn't seem to affect anything else

G'day All, Fitted K100RT bars to my 75S a while ago and took out the weights. It made no difference at all compared to the original bars. The reason for fitting the RT bars was to have a more upright seating position. Cheers Tom Grabau

Hi Tom,
You shouldn't get any vibes on a K75 they are reckoned to be as smooth as.

On my 1985 K100 RS there are no end weights fitted and looking at the grip ends there never have been.
Were they ever fitted to RS's as standard or just after-market / optional extras

This shows them for RS from 1990-1992

Were there big changes from 1989 to 1990 RS models ?

Just curious

The year 1990-1992 is referring to the 4 valve model which did have
a wider handlebar.
And was the only K100RS model with bar end weights factory fitted.

Ah Thanks Inge for the clarification on that.

So BMW thought that the much smoother running 2V model with narrow bars didn't require them.. lol!

Bar end weights on throttle side of my k100 was binding throttle response. I loosened it. I note that it is gone now MN Bar weight and sleeve fell out some where. No noticable vibration. Should I give a shit??

Nope.

Never bothered with 'em. Suspect it's a BMW 'just-in-case' fix for any bikes that might come off the assembly line as tinglers.

Odd. I did notice the difference when my leftside weight made a successful bid for freedom. As Chris says, if you don't feel any difference, junk the other one too.

Hi

I own a 1984 k100 and my handlebar end weight fell off (right side).
I’m interested in purchasing a replacement.
Does anyone have a right side end weight they would like to sell.
Thanks.
Happy new year to our forum members.

Gabriel

The weights are there to deal with any vibration that is transmitted to the handlebars.  The pitch of the vibration is what bothers some folks, so some will find the bar end weights a help and others not so much. The vibration if any is present is rpm dependent.

Every engine has an inherent mechanical vibration at a certain rpm and on some bikes this falls into the cruising speed range and does put some folks hands to sleep.

Like most things bike related, personal choice as to if they work for you or not.
