Hi All - Looking for help with my problem. Bought this running - dodgy clutch 1996 K75 Ultima last year and started to get it going properly. Got ABS sorted , then in January removed gearbox, binned oily clutch, replaced with new and all new seals. Now after a bit of illness I have got to the electrickery and have found the following problem - Petrol tank installed and connected, Ignition on - lights in dash light up correctly but gear position indicator not lit. Put in gear and light still off. Gear number visible in display and changes with pedal operation.. Checked off switch to both sides and seems to be working correctly. Press start button and still no light change or fuel pump click and no sound from starter. Have power to the starter relay. Bulb in dash working.

Apart from the ABS and disconnect and connect the Gearbox position switch, I cannot think of anything else I have disconnected.

The electrics are the same as the K100 so if anyone on that part of the Forum can help please get in touch as well.

Any assistance greatfully received

Is the Neutral light working? Does she fire up when the clutch lever is pulled in?

Just trying to work out what you mean by gear position indicator not lit. The screen itself isn't self illuminated its lit up by one of the bulbs behind. The same as the Clock is illuminated.

Thanks for replying -

No, the neutral lamp is not lit at any time - no sounds whatsoever when start button pressed with clutch in or out.

Time to have a look at the EFI/Electronic ignition troubleshooting guide which is located on the portal page.

from there you will see it's points you in the direction of sorting out the reason why the Neutral lamp isn't coming on... which i guess will probably point towards a bad ground in the circuit...

hmm an interesting one

a blown fuse and or starter motor brushes ? have a look at fuse 7? i have seen them blow from a frozen fuel pump drawing too much current ...after a prelonged sitting event .

how is the earth mounting, clean and tight ?

heres a test ...turn headlights on ...try to start ...does the headlamp go out ? then back on ?

might be time for a look see in the efi electronic trouble shooting guide ........on the portal page

From the description in the first post, it seems like you got two different problems.

Power to the start button is provided by GPI when in neutral, or the clutch switch.

Your GPI problem could be caused by a blown transistor, which directs power to
the neutral light and the starter button.
Then you have to rely on your clutch switch to start, I guess it's also malfunctioning.

To check, disconnect the switch...under tank, left, front...two pole connector
yellow wires at switch side.
Bridge the two contacts at the harness side (also check that power is present)
try the starter.

Hi all and thanks for all the information. Thought I would update and inform as to the new state of play. FUSE 7 What a sod. Athough the fuse was whole it would not let power through to the system. ( thanks charlie77). So I changed all the fuses!. After this (thanks Inge) I joined the clutch switch wires, and then found I had power via the fuse box (Fuse7) to the start button. Tank on and connected and ENGINE STARTED. Next disconnected the clutch switch cable and no start. Joined again and start.. Also the indicators are now working apart from the indicator bulb in the binnacle but still no neutral light. Binnacle off (very smelly of burnt stuff) and close inspection revealed burnt and broken tracks on the circuit board near to the neutral light and the flasher indicator bulbs so that means another circuit board.and also another clutch switch as it was not closing (burnt inside?).

Anyway it is off now to order up the bits and will be back in touch when they are fitted and working.

Thanks again to all

Now to the next part of tfhe saga!!!

George

Congrats with a starting bike!

Fuse #7 feeds switched power to the flasher relay, horn relay and fan relay.

Power to the start button (and others) is provided via fuse #1.

Hi Inge - reckon the problem started (pun!) with the clutch switch ( switch somehow earthed itself ?) as the power from the clutch switch goes straight to to the rt hand switchgear starter switch then ends at the neutral lamp bulb and I think there was either a dead short or a power overload into the binnacle. Fuse 7 was the problem with the horn relay and the flashers and these are repaired.

You were right about there being two seperate problems.

Something a little different.

George.

If you did have a short to ground in the clutch switch/starter button circuit,
it would also be that which killed your output transistor at the GPI PCB.

Yes - that figures - checked the PCB up to the neutral lamp and the track is definitely burned out as is the next track. Have got another binnacle and clutch switch cable on order so - fingers crossed!!

Again thanks for help and will post result.

George
