Hey everybody - my name's Mat, I'm from London and I have recently bought a tatty but awesome '85 K100RT!

I have a laundry list of things I'll be doing to it over the next few weeks (remove the fairing, new headlight and indicators, new bars, clocks, etc etc) and as something of a noob to the BMW I'm sure I'll be asking lots of stupid questions. So thanks in advance!

We've seen worse here on the forum much worse. Take note, it's a very modular bike and many pieces can be replaced. My '85 RT purchased last year needed about 6 months of TLC, but now it's fully road ready (if only the weather would cooperate :silent:).

Hello Mat

welcome indeed - I'm in a similar situation, having recently bought an '89 LT needing some TLC Very Happy

You say you're new to BMW ownership - so it may be helpful for you to be steered in the direction of the UK's "usual suspects" who specialise in mail-order BMW parts and accessories, especially for our "senior" models :

MotorWorks : http://www.motorworks.co.uk/vlive/Home/index.php

MotoBins : http://www.motobins.co.uk/

James Sherlock : http://www.james-sherlock.co.uk/

be warned - even with their warranted-good second-hand parts you can quickly rack up a big spend - don't ask me how I know ! affraid

When I started my apprenticeship back in the dark ages the first tradesman I worked with was a New Zealand Maori and was as he said 5ft 18in and just as broad, he said you can ask all the stupid questions you like but you make any stupid mistakes and I'll kick your arse till your nose bleeds and I have repeated that to many apprentices I trained and that is by far the best thing to do. Asking questions costs nothing and if the person laughs at you then they should not be asked again just ask someone else.

Thanks for the welcome chaps - got a few hours in the garage over the weekend, so true to my word I thought I'd post some snaps for those of you that are interested...

Morning all! Lic5HNi

Morning all! Kc8KOvC

Looks nicer without the top box, I reckon.

Morning all! GjgJgn2

Made a new panel for the ignition barrel and built an ally bracket for the new clocks, which I'm quite pleased with - one slight issue was that when Trail Tech sent me the computer and dash mount, they didn't send me the magnet for the speed sensor! 0/10 to Trail Tech for attention to detail, and 0/10 to me for checking what I receive in the post...

Morning all! IqBHAPh

Looks nice though!

Phase two will be to tackle the back end. Toying with the idea of cutting the frame down and welding a new loop on, building a new seat pan and all that malarkey - looks like a lot of work though! Still, it's not like there's any great riding weather on the horizon!
