I just bought a 1991 BMW K100lt engine crash bars on ebay (still yet to receive), I just want to know if they fit straight on my k100rs 92 16v model?? or will they require any modification! or wont fit at al??

Crash bars! T2ec1610

I crashed my motorcycle and broke the valve cover as well as camshaft bearing cap and by the help of sidecar paul i fixed it and saved the bike, i really dont want to crash again or even if i did i dont want to break anything so i really want to fit this some how!

I can't tell you if they will fit but what I do know is that if all you are getting is the pieces in your picture then you are missing some other pieces that are for mounting the crash bars to the bottom of the engine.  Take a look here http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=0516&mospid=51750&btnr=46_1274&hg=46&fg=70 for more information.  I wish I had my K100LT here now so I could take a picture for you but it's about 800 miles away at my other house.

They wont fit as the exhaust pipes will get in the way.

I think that they will fit but you'll need the correct engine/frame mounts and you'll need to do away with the belly-pan.

I've never seen engine bars on an RS before, so it will take some modification (as already mentioned).

The left and right brackets can be had at Motobins fairly cheaply, and I just bought the rest of the hardware (nuts, bolts) locally.

Engine bars mount to rubber insulated studs (red arrow above) that fit on the ends of the special engine mounting bolts. The same rubber studs are used to attach to the triangle bracket on the left side of the bike. It's the exhaust system on that side that causes the engine bars to mount at odd angles. Individually those rubber studs can get pricy, but I managed to pick some up very cheaply in a lot of odd rubber bits found on e-bay. That only leaves the engine mounting bolts (green arrow above), and again I managed to find some in an assortment of odd bolts sold on e-bay.

Permit me to say that engine bars are over-rated in anything other than a controlled fall (a slip that causes the bike to go over but with you keeping it from hitting the ground very hard). In a crash or uncontrolled fall the bars will become damaged and have to be replaced at considerable cost. IMHO I don't think you will like the looks of the bars on an RS, and secondly faring parts and valve covers may still have to be replaced after a fall. On the plus side, there's a good market for original engine bars, so you can easily get your money back if you so desire.

Fehling of Germany used to make RS-friendly (w/o belly pan) crash bars that mounted to the oil sump and around the frame members.

Here you go:

Crash bars! K100RS%20Motosport

Crash bars! Rh_k100

Crash bars! Left-loaded-LDride

I agree that they're pretty pointless apart from in a static roll-over fall.

Mine were cosmetic and that's being generous. OFF saving "x" kilos and NO qualms.

Planning for the worst is not my style... yet.
