As a new member I was wondering whether I could by-pass all the history and ask a question about the clutch boot underneath my k100rt. Can it be easily changed without major surgery , I mean say, remove rear wheel dissengage clutch cable , fold back clutch arm , remove old boot and replace. And do I to drain the gear box oil .
I value any advice.

It's fiddly but possible, there will be oil in the boot and you will need to check the gearbox level once done. I used a cable tie rather than the normal jubilee.

Yes it's fairly straightforward, but it can be done without removing the rear wheel. If you retain the standard clip, try fitting a longer screw; the normal screw has to be released from the captive nut to get the clip over the ridge on the gearbox.....and then it's a pain to get the thread started....unless you've got three hands of course.

Support the clutch lever with either a bit of wire or a chock between where the cable sits and the muffler.
When you remove the clutch cable the level will fall/ be pushed by the spring and it will tear the rubber boot.
This is an image from Crazy Frog's resto. Hopefully it will give you an idea on what I am talking about.


Oops!!! I didn't tie the clutch lever to the gear box and the rubber boot on the clutch mechanism got destroyed.
($50 mistake)

If the rubber boot is in good condition it will take the pressure of the spring and I am presuming that the boot being shagged is the reason for changing it. That said it is easier to screw the clip up if the pressure is taken by the actuating lever.

I replaced the clutch "boot" on Sunday. It was easy enough. Just fiddly.
If you want to flip the actuating arm back out of the way you will need to remove the silencer first but the back wheel can stay in place.
To compress the spring enough to allow the boot to seat I used the actuating lever & it popped over the locating lip nicely. The screw on my new clip was 3mm shorter than the original & didn't want to start in the threads. The original screw is back in there with the band from the new clip.
I also took the chance to grease the little roller bearings in the actuating arm pivot.
Rolling about under the bike was undoubtedly bloody miserable though.

Makes you wonder where all that crud comes from doesn't it. I had a nightmare re attaching my new boot a while ago, but has been ok till now.
