Where the hell is it?

Right, the bike is back together, turn the ignition switch and all the right dash lights work. Hit the starter button, she turns, but the fuel pump does not whirrrl.

Past threads about this point to the side stand switch, crawled under the bike and looked all around but nada!

al ...the fuel connector plug on 85-86 models is under the right hand side cover ..leaving the tank from the rear ....the earlier models have an electrical connection more to the front lft ,,,.would you confirm this for us ?

it is a 4 pin type connection ..which in past experiece is known to be a problem ....corrossion and bad handling ( ie forgetting to unplug the connector whilst remooving the tank ) often causes the fuel pump to stop functioning ...

often the socket part of the connector is found to have spread ....making a quite un reliable connection

deoxit might solve the corrosion issue ,...but many have found that that adjustment ( ie squeezing the socket part ) is required to provide positive contact

it might be a good idea to check all the fuses as well ...we have seen fuses pop on attempted ..return to service

dont forget that the fuel pumps are subject to all sorts of contamination water and gunk in the tank etc ...and cause they are a roller cell may sieze periodically untill all residues and cleaning processes are performed . (maybe even replacement is required)

hope that helps mate

lots of posts in here about similar issues ...

Yes fuses checked with a multi meter,

Plug is on the right and
contact is good but I haven't check for voltage there. Damn I should
have but it will now all have to wait. Just got a call and found out
that my dad passed away today, so I am on a plane first thing tomorrow
morning, so I pulled the battery to trickle while I am away.

Charlie, I dont have any plugs on the left, but will check again when I am back.

Hi Guys

Ok I'm back, I'm just going to get right back into it as it's probably the best thing for my mental state at the moment.

Will check the connectors again, shoot it with some contact cleaner and apply some dielectric grease. Will give that a go and see what happens.

Quick question. Does the pump run once the key is turned or only when the start button is pressed?

The pump will only run while the button is pressed or the engine is running, the ECU has to be getting a signal from the Hall sensors. It will continue to run for 1.5 seconds after the button is released without the engine running.
All that dielectric grease does is make a mess it's not worth using.

Dielectric grease (DG) does nothing to enhance the flow of electricity. You use DG to protect the connection from water etc after you have an ultra clean (bright, shiny surfaces) connection.

If you want to enhance the flow of electricity and clean the connection at the same time, use DeoxIT D5 (available from Jaycar, the little red bottle called Power Enhancer). It works a treat. Make sure you have a tight connection to start with.

I see that Rick has told you about the fuel pump.

Good idea to keep your mind occupied. I hope things are working out for you.

Get one from an ED falcon sedan and use big zip ties to make the rubber bit fit. You need to put new fittings on the wires.
They work on the same pressure and volume requirements.
Or from this guy http://www.euromotoelectrics.com/BMW-K-Parts-s/60.htm?searching=Y&sort=13&cat=60&show=20&page=1

Before buying a new pump.....also check if you got power at the fuel pump terminals.
The 4 pole connector outside the tank is a well known problem source.

Bought an Italian made one from eBay, forget the make.
Straight fit, worked perfectly and had an aluminium strainer on the bottom instead of nylon.
Cost about £60 new.

And that price is about half of what others are selling the same pump for.

Okay, just confirmed that the fuel pump is dead. I pulled it and the rubber booth is all gummy and the hose out of the filter basket is brittle and hard, in fact it just broke off when I pulled the pump out.

The motor kicks when I apply power but does not turn so I guess that something was sucked in, causing the failure.

Looks like I have to get more in tank hoses too.

If I use an after market pump with out the filter basket, then what do I do with the vent pipe the original hose connected to?

Rick G

Rick G
admin

Disconnect the hose at the pipe near the filler and leave it that way but make sure the filter supplied is on the new pump. You may need a small piece of wire to hold the long type filter folded in half so its easy to get in.

Reverse the polarity and your pump may start to turn in the opposite direction and get free ( maybe spitting a peace of rubber).
Just do it for a short time otherwise you will burn the motor.
If it starts in the opposite direction, try it again the right way.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained....

Try to loosen the screws without taking the pump apart. (Just a 1/4 turn)
It must be a piece of rubber inside and it may be stocked under the rollers.

Good luck

Ok, managed to squeeze in some time after dinner this evening and took apart the pump using the guide found in the download section.

It was pretty much straight forward but my pump must have been an older unit as the oring was not in the ali housing but in the top cap. Sorry I forgot to take a pic.

Also the bottom plates are different and my unit has slot head screws instead of torx head screws.

Fuel pump not running - Side stand switch? File_zpsb773af24

I cleaned out all the bits and sprayed the lot with lanox and reassembled it. Hooked up the battery and woohoo it works.

Ok so it works outside the tank. I have no clue if it will work inside the tank yet! LOL!

The other problem I have is that I don't have the rubber damper to mount it to the plastic clip. so I have to figure that one out next.

Will see what i can do on the weekend as I have a 12 hr shift tomorrow.

I also cant believe that no one in WA has in tank fuel tube! Tried Veals, Coventry's, Repco, Auto Pro, Auto One, Supercheap and no one has it.

Now I was looking at this (taken from Motobrick)

Fuel pump not running - Side stand switch? Xx

Option for the fuel pump surround

« Reply #12 on: September 13, 2012, 10:06:27 AM »

About a month or so ago, my fuel
pump shot craps. When I removed it, the filter basket thingy was
fubar'd and the surround had been reduced to a gooey muck tar like
substance that I'm sure some of you are familiar with. The plastic ring
that the surround bolts to was ok, minus one of the lock tabs, it still
locked, but the one tab's release was broken.

Anyway, I did some
poking around and found the $18 Herko/ebay fuel pump (thanks
Motobrickers :yes), but it is quite a bit smaller than the original
(original is 52mm and the ebay/herko is 37mm). So this is what I came
up with to replace the $100 assembly of the surround and the sleeve that
you need to adapt the smaller/less expensive pump to the surround.

First,
you will need the right size of foam backer rod. This foam is made for
construction, as a spacer in concrete for expansion, it looks like
this:
Fuel pump not running - Side stand switch? Backer-rods-right-image03Fuel pump not running - Side stand switch? Backerrod
You
basically stuff it in a crack and then caulk over it. It's a cheap
spacer, so you aren't filling the crack with the more expensive caulking
product. It is a closed cell polyethylene foam, that comes in sizes
ranging from 1/4" to 6" diameter. If you look up polyethylene you will
find it is pretty impervious to chemical attack. There isn't any way to
"glue" it because of this property. So it should be suitable for work
in a fuel tank. Should even be ethanol proof.

I had a leftover
piece of 2.75" leftover from another project. That size is a bit larger
than the "hole" the pump assembly sits in. I used a 3.5" length.

You
will need a way to "core" out the piece lengthwise, I used a piece of
scrap bicycle frame tubing. That I sharpened so it would cut easily and
straight through the rod. (When I was first working on it, I used an
un-sharpened piece of tubing to make the core, but it cut a "cone" out
instead of a nice hole.) I used the sharpened tube kind of like a drill
(by hand) and went half way through from one end and then went in the
other half from the other end to make sure the hole wasn't cone shaped.
It was ~1" diameter, so the pump fits in pretty snugly. Like this:
Fuel pump not running - Side stand switch? IMG_6924s

What
I didn't get a picture of was the zip ties I used to hold the prefilter
on with. These just go through the center of the backer rod and hold
the screen in place while you stuff it into the hole. Once you get it
in the hole ad the lock ring, and hook everything back up.

Here is the what it looks like:
Fuel pump not running - Side stand switch? IMG_6925s
Fuel pump not running - Side stand switch? IMG_6926s

So
far it has been working fine. About the only thing I've noticed is the
backer rod kind of turns clear in the tank once in fuel, but it's still
there and not dissolving or anything. I needed to replace the in tank
fuel line as well, this silly piece of hose is ~$30 from Napa (or
anywhere else I looked, and only available in 1' lengths Fuel pump not running - Side stand switch? Wow7-eyes)

Part
of the reason I used the larger piece of backer rod, was that this
thing will want to float on top of the fuel, so it needs to be held in
pretty well, so I wanted the wedging action in the tank and the lock
ring to really hold everything down.

I will update this post if anything changes.

Fuel pump - $18 shipped from ebay.
6' piece of backer rod - ~$12 full retail (you could make ~20 of these though. :laugh)
1' piece of in tank fuel line - ~$28

Does anyone know if the polyethylene foam really hold up to being immersed in petrol? If so, I'm sure I can get some and have the pump in by Saturday!

I wouldn't use anything else but what is supplied for a pre pump filter as you need to have a 6 micron dacron or similar. If an 8 microm particle gets through it can sieze the pump rollers. Petrol/gasoline has a very low surface tension and so needs very tight tolerances to work correctly.

Right I couldn't wait anymore, so into the work shop to see what I could use to fabricate a way to hold the Falcon ED pump in place.

Looked at the old damper and thought maybe I could use the screws and make hard ali mount and lo and behold, I discovered a hidden treasure!

Embedded in the mount there was a stainless steel plate with the screws locked in place. The gears start turning and this morning I cleaned it out and made a hard mount.

Now for other newbies like me who might be attempting this, please note, I spent a most frustrating half and hour wondering why I could not get the lot to fit back on to the mounting plate in the tank. I took it all apart thinking that the ali strips interfered with the mount plate cut outs etc and it wasn't till I looked into the tank again that I realized that the plastic plate can only go in ONE way!!!!!

I know it's not the best pic, but if you look carefully you will see that the top tab is wider then the lower tab.

Once that was sussed, it all went back together with out a hitch.

Actually it's really quiet, I have to lean down to the tank to hear the pump, but yes, I will try to get a thin rubber gasket to go between the ali and stainless plates.

Oh does anyone know how long zip ties will last in a petrol tank? Wondering if I should change it to a stainless clamp?
