when making the connections to the coils can someone confirm which pins take which colour wires on the coils.... prob the best way would be

I know the colours of the wires that connect to the coils just want to get them the right way around so once my fuel pump arrives (hopefully in the morning) I can crank her over and she has the best chance of firing..

Front - Brown

Right Hand

The blue wire is the signal to coil 1-4.
The red wire is the signal to coil 2-3.

This thread is very informative to me, as I have just started having performance problems with my 89 K100RS. Shocked Runs erratic and loses power as it warms up. I pulled all four plugs and the two outside plugs were very dark, indicating loss of fire and loading up, while the two center plugs were a nice grey color. By reading this thread about wiring, am I correct in assuming that cylinders 1 and 4 are fed off the same coil and 2 and 3 off the other?

I replaced the dark plugs and it made no difference. I suspected a coil because it runs best initially and tries to wind up and seems to run on all four, but as it warms up loses power and you can tell a couple of cylinders are down.

Is the location of the coils fairly easy to access? Question

Thanks for the help! I love the bike that has just turned 58,000 miles and still feels very nice. coil wiring.... 447221

hi pathfinder,

I see your new to the forum, pop into the Members Introduction page and start a thread there to say Hi to the forum, you will start to get hellos from all over.

Cylinders 1 + 4 fire from the left coil and 2 + 3 from the right hand coil, there locations are based on sitting on the bike, the left hand side, just to the right of the throttle bodies, there is probably a plastic shield around them which is held on by 4 bolts/screws

It wasn't until I cleaned my coils that I could read the sticker on them which indicates what cylinders they fired on! I am sure there are a couple of threads on here with similar problems, may well be worth doing a quick search.

If you also drop back to the Portal you will find a link to the electrical diagrams which Crazy Frog has created to break them down really well

Welcome Pathfinder!

I would have started with checking the ground to the coils (brown wire)....that the terminals and connectors is clean.

You could also try to run a additional ground wire.

Then the terminals and connectors at the positive feed (green/yellow wire), and that enough voltage reaches the coils.

Thanks guys! I'm overwhelmed at the quality of responses to my post! cheers Really is a confidence boost to a hunch I had about the coils to begin with. I have had this bike for four years and this is the first hiccup I have experienced with anything, and at 58,000 miles most bikes would be on the scrap heap!

Really appreciate the advice as most of my recreational wrenching is done on snowmobiles, coil wiring.... 815479305 of which I have about 40 vintage that I restore and still race.

I took your advice and cleaned up the ground wires to both coils, put in two new plugs in 1 and 4 and took a cruise! Initially it was totally cured, but after about ten or fifteen minutes it started breaking up at high revs. sounds like a combination of factors, of which the grounds were only a part. Going to bite the bullet and try a new coil, any advice on where to pick one up? Thanks for all the advice, it's not cured, but it sure is getting better! cheers

have a search on the forum for Hall Sensors. they are known for breaking down when they get hot.... far far cheaper as well than getting a coil pack.

I think that if you look in the substitute area you will find there is an alternative to the BMW one.

Time to liven up this thread as I'm connecting the coils... :p
Does brown go to the spades marked ''-'' , and green/yellow on the spades marked "+"?
That would make the center terminal on each coil the signal terminal, correct?
