I got a 2nd hand LCD from motorworks to replace my bleeding one. I stripped the panel apart and got the old LCD out, and the replacement is missing a contact foot.

I've had a winge and asked for a refund, $15 postage for god sake, but can I make a good one from these two?

Has anyone split the plastic before to get to the components? Can it be done?

I'll get a better image later.

the part should just almost fall out the slot in the back. do not take the shell apart. it's just a little square rubber wafer....slides right out & back in....they often fall out & easy to loose. Probably should save the other one too before discarding the old display.
I don't know how they work but they do!

those rubbers are a carbon impregnated series of layers of silicon they act as minature wires in a planar direction ,

should be swappable without isssue but be carefull not to clean off the carbon areas too much ...else you might get a segment not working too good ....

but do clean up the copper pads on the circuit board that they attach to ....its just a presure fit

hope that helps

I may have moved the carbon rod but I won't know if it will work for weeks.

So many parts coming, so far to travel Sad

I also see the bad LCD just dropped out of the plastic holder once I loosed the carbon rods.
Surely the LCD's can be bought and replaced on their own. I'll look around.

Might want to check out what's available from E-ink.

http://www.eink.com/display_products_aurora.html

This is the display technology used in e-readers like Kindles, Nooks, and similar. I see that they have a segmented display which would be useful as a gas gauge. They make simple three element 7-segment display modules as well. The beauty of the e-ink technology is that it is easily readable in daylight, at night with artificial light and can retain an image with power removed. They are also extremely thin and take negligible current to operate.

E-ink sells a segmented display starter kit that has all the parts for experimenting with e-ink technology

Would it be possible to use similar parts from cheap calculators?
