Good evening good folks of the K100 Forum.  I have reason to make a visit from Canberra to Brisbane in early March.  Being a personal trip I am choosing to ride Very Happy .  My current plan is to ride over and head up the Newell Highway.  Going to make it a two day run and so am looking at overnighting somewhere around Moree/Goondiwindi.  I'll probably need to rest the old bones by then.

Now the question......Does anyone know of some good bike friendly accommodation around Moree/Goondiwindi that will not cost an arm and a leg (and need to throw in a hand to get change).  Was going to consider camping, but don't want to take too much, so am opting for a half decent lodging establishment. Brisbane Run 905546712

Brisbane isn't a problem as I have family up there.

Hi Dave , I'm an ex Moree resident of 16 years.
My best recommendation , although not the cheapest , is to check out the Gwydir Carapark on the southern approach to town on the Newell highway. You have a selection of accommodation including camping , with some nice mineral hot spa pools , quite refreshing any time of year . the day / night temps are similiar to C'berra that time of year. There is also a tavern across the road for a decent meal. It's about a 9hr run up from Canberra through molong , cowra etc.
Be wary of taking your bike anywhere off the bitumen between Coonabarabran and Goondi( "Gundy") after rain , the black soil is like baby powder when dry , but you'll sink in in it when wet.

The free camps book I used throughout the recent Tassie trip offers a site at Pallamallawa ( "Pally" to the locals), 32km east of Moree on the Gwydir highway, some good fishing here as well , Yellowbelly is the best catch.
Most campgrounds are located off the tar and should be researched well in advance.
hope this helps ,Ed.

What about sleeping in the bushes at the McDonalds at Moree?

Open 24 hours.

Don't have to go far for meals.

Next to Mitre 10 if you're chasing any bits 'n' pieces.

Toilets are available too!

No need to thank me...I'm here to help!

Charlie, a little geography lesson is in order here I suspect.

Cootamundra is indeed south of Narrabri, about 600 kms south. Might you have been thinking of Coonabarabran???

Maybe we'll sit down with a map around the fire at Karuah Rally next weekend if we both make it. Judging by your recent posts you'll get there quicker than me. (Sorry to hijack your thread Dave but I couldn't resist)

Cheers

Yes Gaz
You would think that Charlie  would remember camping at Coonabarabran with the trucks going past on the airbrakes all night.

Thanks for the ?help? so far folks.  The reason behind the Newell is that I haven't done it before and they say the towns are pretty well apart with a 110 speed limit most of the way.

yep your right gaz ,  smithy and all .....

I have issues expressing the  names of those places time to time ....not actually remembering the places but getting the names ...erm out of this old head ..  I blame my stroke a few years ago now .

defiantly meant Coonabarabran    not Cootamundra

quite often I get stuck on a simple technical explanation ...because of a word that  i cant recover  from the depths of the mind

I can picture it ...almost feel it .....just cant say it

conversely if im really busy ...it all flows without any trip up at all ...for that time

this traverses many things and I can only say sorry to those that have bothered to listen ...but i got the final explanation  reference wrong ...because of this stupid block that happens ..
I don't want your sympathy ...just correct me ...and all is good ...it was probably what I was thinking but couldn't get the right naming convention

these hipocalmus things are pretty complex it seems to me .

cheers guys

have a great trip dave

It's all good Charlie 99.  I knew exactly what you meant.  I had absolutely no problem knowing.  I also have trouble with remembering the names of places out west and where they are in association with each other.  Too many of them sound the same to me.  It's as if the planner just came up with one name and then varied a couple of letters. Cool

Agree. And to get there, there're some pretty awesome rides and scenery up thru Boorowa, Cowra, Bathurst, Mudgee, Scone. Between Mudgee and Scone is totally awesome. Big sweepers, wide, well maintained roads.
New England Hway is good too and there's plenty of 110kph zones where you can pick up the pace. Heavily patrolled these days tho.

a classic tale Nigel , one of which many an Aussie traveller , including some of our forum members here know well. I'm no where near it yet, but working on it with the help of everyone here.
Dave , the newell for the most isn't too bad , it can be considered  rather bland in comparison to the New England though. mainly due to running along the Great Divide. you wont know til you try it.
Many of us have our favourite roads , however it is not until you have tried others that you really gain an appreciation for the ones you like .
if you have the time , venture east as you leave Cowra, and head up through Rhylstone, and back across to mudgee. I hear it is a top ride through the Bylong Valley.
enjoy the ride.

enjoy the Karuah ride chaps .
