I customized a 87 K100, and opened the exhaust up a bit. It's backfiring a bit on decel and was wondering if there's some adjusting that can be done to make it run a little smoother. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

reseal the tb (throttle body ) rubbers they often let a little air in.
since doing that myself ...almost all backfiring has disappeared completely

but it only started happening after I modified the exhaust. no backfires w/ stock exhaust. seems like I need to adjust the air/fuel mixture. someone suggested resetting the computer but I haven't been able to find any info on that.

My stock standard 84 RS does the same with the staintune Zorst I guess that is the price you pay for performance...although its not too intrusive and burbles more than actually flaming farting...etc

There's no "resetting" of the ICU or L-Jetronic.

Try less engine braking to reduce backfiring.

Check the TPS setting.

Check the valves. 

Install new spark plugs - NGK D7EA. (But not when you're messing with the valves as carbon deposits can fall into the valves if you do both at the same time.)

Sync the throttle bodies.

I would be checking the TPS first but just leaking exhaust crush washers at the head can cause backfire.

I was going to suggest checking for leaks too. In my experience, backfiring and popping on the over-run is usually a poor seal somewhere allowing back pressure to pull in cool air.

no exhaust at the time of this - fyi. oh and I'm not using any gauges
